Chicago Public Schools Open New All-Boys High School

 

In 1971 Lane Tech history was forever changed when Lane first began to accept girls for the first time since it’s doors opened in 1908. Superintendent James Redmond cited a drop in enrollment and a lack of a technical school education for girls. So, since 1971 there has not been an all-boys Chicago Public High School. However, in September 2006, the Chicago Public Schools opened up a new All-boys Public High School called Urban Prep.

 

Here are some facts about the new school.

 

·        The school is temporarily located at Lindblom High School in 2006.                                           Students at the new Urban Prep

  • The school will move to it’s permanent home in 2007 at Englewood High School
  • The 2006 class is all male, all black, and has about 150-160 students although it accepts any male student who live within the city of Chicago
  • All students are required to wear uniforms.
  • The school will field football, basketball, track, and baseball teams in its first year.
  • All students take an extended class day from 8:00am-4:30pm and are required to participate in at least two extra-curricular activities.
