Date: 2/26/2007 Time: 11:19:18 AM Remote User: CommentsAnnouncement from the Fields of Dreams: A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supported and attended the pasta fundraiser. What a wonderful group of athletes and parents! We made $9,350 for the athletic projects to benefit our children!
CommentsBasketball team vs. Foreman in IHSA regional semi-finals; Wed Feb 28, 2007 7:30pm at Loyola Also, Whitney Young beat Simeon to win the Public League Sophomore basketball city championship
CommentsWhitney Young won the girls and boys city championship in basketball. They also made it to the Semi-finals in boys varsity basketball. Whitney Youngs girls varsity won the city championship over Marshall and will play in the Supersectionals vs New Trier. They are looking ot return to the state finals where took third in the state last year. With a very young team, Whitney is favorite to finish in the top 2 in both boys and girls basketball next year!! They are doing something right in basketball at Whitney. Although, I still think Lane is the much better school overall. We are not as arrogant as they are at Whitney and we have the history and tradition over Whitney. School is about overall feel and Lane still has the feeling!!!
CommentsLane Tech vs. Foreman Wed, Feb. 28, 7:30pm at Loyola Academy (Wilmette) IHSA regional semi-final Lane is seeded 9th and Foreman is seeded 7th. The winner plays top seeded Loyola Academy Friday.
CommentsLane Tech Boys Varsity basketball game; regional final vs Loyola Academy; Friday, March 2, 2007 @7:30pm at Loyola in Wilmette. Watch Lane Tech play vs. Jeffrey and Marcus Jordan, sons of Michael Jordan.
Commentsgood luck boys basketball cuz ur gonna need it badly
CommentsI hope Coach Rio isn't sick again. he wasn't in school all week. If he is, I hope he gets better soon!
CommentsSIMEON FRESHAMNS TEAM REPEATED AND WON CITY TODAY BY BEATING VON STEUBEN BY 3 POINTS. THIS MEANS THAT VARSITY AND FRESHMAN REPEATED AND THIER SOPHMORE TEAM ALMOST REPEATED BUT CAME IN SECOND TO A GOOD WHITNEY YOUNG TEAM WHICH THEY LOST BY ONE THE FUTURE OF SIMEONS BASKETBALL PROGRAM STILL LOOKS BRIGHT FOR YEARS TO COME AFTER DERRICK ROSE AND COMPANY HAVE LEFT FOR COLLEGE.
CommentsCheck out the photos from the Fields of Dreams Committee Pasta Dinner Fundraiser held at Lane Tech on Feb 3, 2007. The event raised $9,800 and was attended by about 1,200. Special thanks to faculty, staff, Letterman's club, and other volunteers for setting up and hosting a surprisingly well attended event. The pictures can be found at: www.FieldsofDreams.com
CommentsLane Tech brought close to 1,000 fans to watch the Lane Tech vs. Loyola state boys varsity playoff game. Special thanks to Jarka and all who set up the busses for the students to goto the game. It made it easy for students to get up to Loyola and create a fstive environment. It was an incredible atmosphere and show of support by Lane Tech fans!!
CommentsGIRLS’ SOCCER: Girls interested in trying out for soccer should see the information outside room 332. The first tryout date is Monday, March 5th. Each girl needs a valid physical to tryout. See Mr. Ricks with any questions. LANE TECH GIRLS SOCCER IS LOOKING TO REPEAT AS CITY CHAMPS IN 2007!!!
CommentsChristopher Kyles, Lane Tech sophomore is an excellent athlete for Lane. He finsihed in third place in the Illinois State Invitational held on March 3, 2007. That is third place in one of the biggest indoor invitaionals in Illinois with over 20 teams and 100 runners in the 55 meter dash alone. There were some good teams at the Inviational including: Thornton Fractional North, St. Rita, Bloom, Urbana, Quincy, and Plainfield South. Kyles finsihed third with a time of 6.67. Kenny Blanks of Lane finsihed first with a time of 6.66. Those times out them near the top in the state for the 55 meter dash. Kyles also won the city sophomore championship last year in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.7. Furthermore he played on the varsity football team as a sophomore. Those accomplishments alone would make Kyles one of the top sohomore athletes at Lane.
CommentsGreat to see all the additions to the website. Thanks to Neil for all his hardwork. G.S.
Commentscome out, come out, wherever you are. brady guys. see, nobody cared about brady and he's long forgoten and its all his fault lane hasn't played in the openers at soldiers field. where would would we be without the rio family.
CommentsI'm guessing that Brady will get blamed for anything that goes wrong with Lane Tech football for the next 2 years , until all the players he contaminated are out of the system.People are truly amazing!
Commentsit will take that long for rio to make things right again and make the players tough again on the field and not with just weights.
Commentsand rio will have all the players running the same offense and defense, not like brady doing his own thing
CommentsMaybe, Rio will have Jim Kezios striaghten things out for him. Just wondering? What did and does Jim Kezios do? Does he get paid to yell at players on game days? Never seen him at practices. Nice job! Where do I apply?
Commentsim going to be a fresh man for 2007-08 im very excited and looking forward to LANE
CommentsIf all the sophmore coaches were the problem on the football staff then how come nick rio still has a job, did he even play football when he went to lane.
CommentsGirls waterpolo won there first two games.
CommentsHow could someone question nick rio? He's right up their with Frank Lehti, Gordie Gillespie, and Pat Cronin, then there's nick rio.
CommentsCan someone email the publisher at Publisher@LaneTechFan.com the water polo schedule and other spring sports schedules so he can publish it on this site?
Commentseveryone still wants to know what jim kezios does for the football team. does he get paid by lane for being rio's best friend? players have no idea who he is and he's one of their coaches. someone should look into if he's drawing a salary. and, the only thing i rememeber nick rio doing while a student at lane was scarfing down taco bell and getting passes out of classes.
CommentsLook into. Get off your *** and start asking questions. You won't do it of course. The reason being is, there's nothing there for you to find. So quit talking **** about a good man.
CommentsBoys Tennis Tryouts will be at McFedritch March 13-14.
CommentsMarch 23rd 2007, 7:00pm Auditorium - A special Concert featuring Lane's Orchestra, Choir & Band to help dedicate the new Auditorium Seats. Everyone is welcome and best of all this concert is FREE... Thank you to the Lane Tech Century Foundation for providing the funds for new comfortable seats in the main floor of the Auditorium!!!
CommentsLane finished 2nd to St. Rita in a boys water polo tournament. Along the way they beat Mt. Carmel. Water polo is still a relatively new sport at Lane and in the Public League. Lane always finsihes in the top 3 in boys and girls swimming and boys and girls water polo. Look for continued imrovement in the upcoming years. Head coach for all the swimming and water polo teams for Lane is a young guy named Josue Sabilon. He is startign a new swim club at Lane calle dthe Chciago Indians. It will be opne for all swimmers age 6-21. This is the first swim club program run out of a CPS school by a CPS coach. Can you imagine how much improved our swimimn gprogrmas will be if we identify and develop talent at a young age of 6? This new swim club program can revolutionize the history of Lane forever. Slowly but surely Lane's swimming and diving programs are starting to improve. What's next? Could someone take the initiative to run club sports for volleyball, soccer, etc?
CommentsIt's interesting to see that most Lane teams are taking the opposite approach of the football team , by scheduling a lot of tough non-conference games against suburban and Catholic programs. You're certainly not going to prepare for state competition by playing all weak public school teams. I have also been interested to see that most public league sports have lower level championships where at the end of the year the best of the public freshmen and sophmore teams at least to get to play against each other , but that program wss dropped for football. What possible sense does that make? The only tough sophmore football games played in the previous years were the non-conference games, and the city playoff games at the end of the season. Now the soph and freshmen teams will only play against mostly weak city competition.Doesn't seem to be the best way to prepare for the future.
CommentsTo the last poster, yes it is quite interesting to see other what Lane teams are doing in terms of scheduling tougher competition, where as the football team will be playing 'bottom feeders' But, it seems the team would rather get wins against Kenwood and CVS, then play more challeging teams and prepare for state playoffs. My question is... have they (Lane's coaches)given up on state playoffs already? And, another question should be is....why other Lane coaches will be helping Coach Stahl with the Chicxago Force (pro women's football) instead of preparing Lane's football progam. It seems other schools go 'year-round' in their football programs. While, Lane's program seems to do the 'bare-miminum'.
CommentsThe football team is playing Kenwood for one year. It was the only school that Lane could get for a home game for one year. The reason for that is because the Lane/St.Pats home and home resumes in 2008. Lane wanted to play Simeon again. Lane asked Simeon to switch to a home game for Lane to balance the schedule. Simeon said no. CVS wanted to play us. Before Lane played Simeon it was playing CVS. By the way, CVS is playing Lockport for their first game. The Lane Junior Varsity is playing Brother Rice, St. Pats, Loyola, and I believe Mount Carmel. No more soft games for the championship sophmore teams. They're going to learn what it is to get hit at an early stage of their high school careers. The Lane coaches help the Chicago Force after all football players, that are not playing in other sports, weightlift and do their agilities. Thanks for showing your concern. The Lane coaching staff has things under control.
CommentsDear Field of Dreams Committee............ I would try to contact someone to have Lane's facilities used for the Olympics, if Chicago gets them. Maybe, if Chicago is chosen, then Lane's facilities could be upgraded without all the 'red-tape' from CPS. While, the facilties may not be of Olympic dimensions for competition, I would think the athletes could practice for their events on lane's campus. And, your project will get the needed assistance................. Walter Brzeski ('83)
CommentsThis is the non-conference schedule in 2005: Wk.1 Lockport (Away) Wk. 2 Waukegan (Home) Wk. 3 Simeon (Away) In 2006: Wk. 1 Lockport (Home) Wk. 2 Evanston (Home) Wk. 3 Simeon (Home) In 2007 it will probably be: Wk.1 Kenwood (Home) Wk. 2 Evanston (Away) Wk 3. CVS (Home)
CommentsHere's my early take on the non-conference football schedule for 2007._______Kenwood: Easy game for Lane Tech versus this traditionally weak Public League School. Prediction Lane 45-Kenwood 0;_________Evanston: Evanston graduates all of it's DI stars from last year including star runnign back Michael Bolden. Plus, Lane beat their sophomore team in 2006. But this game is at Evanston where the atmosphere will be festive and filled with fans. This will be Lane's gae of the year and probably define thier season. Prediction Lane 23 Evanston 17________CVS: CVS finsihed with a 5-5 overall conference record last year playing in the Illini-Prairie State Conference, the toughest conference in the Public Leauge with Hubbard, Morgan Park, and Dunbar. Lane last played CVS in 2005 and we barely got by them 45-44 .Lane had a fairly talented team that year with Division I star Xavier Torres(Central Michigan), Ed Cortez (Harper College), and Jorge Robles (St.Xavier). So this game will not be a mis match. Prediction: Lane 14 CVS 13.
Commentslanes gonna lose to all those teams but kenwood because their whole defense is practically gone.....medina niedzala mcgillis etc....o yea and they were all captains
CommentsWhoa ! All those guys are not playing next year ? What's going on ? Anyone else besides those three ? Although those are 3 pretty good players.
CommentsLane Tech's boys baseball freshman teams have won city for at least the last 6 years in a row. The varsity team has won city for the last two years in a row. However, the sophomore team for some reason has never won city in the last 6 years or so. The Public League has 4 major powers in baseball: Harlan, Simeon, Clemente, and Lane Tech. Sometimes, other teams sneak in there. But, it is still tough to win the city baseball championship. Baseball is one of the sports where, if you have a hot pitcher pitching on your team that day, it may be enough to beat a better team. Heck, even Foreman upset Lane in the city playoffs a couple years ago. The only thing we can control is hard work and intelligent planning. Focus, on that and the rest should fall in place.
CommentsI'm confident Lane's football team will reload with talent from the city championship sophomore team. We had 7 freshman play on the sophomore team last year. Some of those freshman were: talented running backs Thadeus Scott and Alex Brown; and steller linemen Dayton English (5-10; 235lb) and Louis Trinka (6-2; 200lb). Especially watch out for Louis Trinka. He is big, tall, still growing, and is a great athlete. He is a very fast for his size, punishes you when tackling, and even plays on Lane's freshman basketball team. I expect great things from Scott, Brown, English, and Trinka - don't be surprised if you see them playing at the varsity level next year as sophomores.
CommentsDayton English has transferred to div1 high school in Mississippi. Otherwise the comments are on the mark. I agree that Lane has some real talented freshman players to contribute to winning season this year.
CommentsLet us not forget Tyler Jones the freshman runnigback that moved up for the city championship sophomore game. He scored the only Lane touchdown of the game, which won that game.
CommentsLets hope that if all those talented freshmen go straight to varsity, that they get more playing time then Christopher Kyles got this year.
CommentsRiley O'Neill and Andre Alvarez are 2 more sophs brought up to varsity that had virtually no playing time.
CommentsOne of those mentioned freshman that might move up, welcomes the challenge. As a matter of fact would love to have played on varsity if given the chance last year. “You have to beat one to be one"
Commentswhy aren't u in class freshman, don't end up as one of those freshmen that 3 years later is academically ineligible to get a scholarship, we've had too many of those
CommentsThank you for your concern, but I decided not to attend class today if you don't mind. As far as not being academically ineligible to get a scholarship, it might not be needed. Scholarships are great but will not relay on it to attend college. What God has planned, no one can stop it.
Commentsglad you're not going to RELAY on it to attend college, guess you're planning on jumping right to the pro's, good plan
CommentsIf that’s what you think, I plan to go right to the pros? Funny!! You missed the entire message. I didn’t know that I planned to play pro ball, would be nice but not my only plan. THANKS again for thinking for me, can you tell me what else I think? Only God‘s judgment counts to me.
CommentsI think the person meant that he did not want to rely on an athletic scholarship to pay for college. Instead, he will either pay for it himself or get loans, etc. He was not implying that he is a shoo in to go pro or anything like that.
CommentsAndre Alvarez and Riley O'Neil were sophs brought up to play varsity. They did get some playing time. Riley O'Neil primarily played back up wide receiver to seniors Chris Anton and Fuad Salami. Andre Alvarez got even more playing time on the line primarily and he can also play receiver. I'd say one of the biggest reasons they didn't get more playing time was due to the lack of use of the wide recievers that Lane used last year- not to a lack of talent. We were primarily a running team last year with William Moorehead and Christopher Blackmon so we didn't utilize the passing game alot last year. Look for both Riley o'Neil and Andre Alvarez to play an even bigger role next year. By the way Riley O'Neil also was promoted to this year's varsity basketball team as well. They are both big and strong players in the 6-2" to 6'3" range height wise and 190-200 lbs weight wise.
CommentsThank you for your explanation of my response to my concerned psychic.
CommentsAdd Alvarez to the list with Medina, McGillis, and Niedzala.
CommentsIf it’s true that Alvarez, Medina, McGillis, and Niedzala will no longer play football. That will indeed be a lost to the football team. I’m sure they have their reasons. I’m just amazed at how easily the young men give up. If they are as talented as what is being said about them why would the allow anyone to force them out (If it’s true that they are leaving). I suggest that the next set step up maybe it’s time for a new set to shine. Tryouts for this varsity football this season should be filled with new players ready to step up and old players trying to hold on to the spot. To those students who see this as a breakdown in the program instead you should look at as your opportunity. A team is what you make it. No matter what is being said about the football team, you as players can have a winning seasons.
CommentsThe Lane Tech Varsity Cheerleading Team won the City Championship on March 10, 2007, but it was not posted. =[ -Le'Dia Smith, Varsity Cheerleader
Commentsyou have to give the publisher the info to post results
CommentsWhitney Young is claiming they won the city cheerleading championship. If you look at Whitney's official school website at http://www.wyoung.org they have an announcement on their front page stating "Cheerleaders win City of Chicago Championship". I believe it when our cheerleader Le'Dia says we won. Can someone get the record straight and re-verify to this board who really won.
CommentsWhitney Young won the Pom-Pon city championship and Lane won the cheerleading city championship. Whitney Young's website is incorrect. They should have stated that they won Pom-Pon's not cheerleading.
CommentsAdrian Moore- Lane Tech basketball star from the mid 80's will be inducted this week to the Chicago Public League Hall of Fame.
CommentsBoys lacrosse schedule found @ http://lanetech.illinoisboyslax.com/
Commentsgirls lacrosse won 18-3 vs Mather
CommentsThe girls water polo team won the Maine East Water Polo tournament over the weekend. Along the way, they beat suburban schools Maine East and Deerfield.
CommentsCONGRATS to all the Lane Teams and athletes that won this week ! Great job !
CommentsThe Fields of Dreams Committee is still looking for funds to create a new baseball stadium. The plan is to reach out to all our state representatives and senators within the next two weeks.......Also, they are looking to raise additonal funds by selling raffle tcikets to the entire student body, parents, etc. It will take a whole effort by the Lane community to get the baseball stadium....
CommentsI hope the Fields of Dreams Committee is also looking for softball fields as well. An argument can be made that girls softball is Lane's most competitive teams. The coaches are first class, we are competitive with suburban schools, and the interest level and talent is there at Lane. We currently have a JV and Varsity girls softball team. The only reason why we don't have a frosh-soph team or additional levels is because there are not enough Public League Schools to field teams for other levels. Thus we only have a JV that has to play predominantly Suburban schools. Our JV takes the place of our freshman nad Soph levels. Our team does all this while playing Home games all the way at Horner Park.....Last year's team had a couple all area players in Daniella Torres and Heather Schaefer. We also had a couple playing at college level now. For example, Jeneane Epstein is playing at Divison I SIU right now. The team blasted Evanston 12-1 in the state playoffs before losing 1-0 in a heartbreaker to softball power New Trier. So the softball team is dead serious about competing. Can you imagine how much better the girls softball team can become with an on campus softball field.
CommentsWhat happened to the big donation the Chicago Cubs were supposed to make toward a new basesball field ? Also, what is going on with the Chicago Park District improving the land bought behind the stadium, as well as the rest of Clark park ? Lastly, what about the millions the CPS was supposed to be allocating toward refurbishing the stadium ?I was under the impression a lot of money has already been pledged by various politicians andd organizations , seems things should be starting to roll now, especially with the NFL grant.
CommentsFor the latest Fields of Dreams update check out the March 15 article in this website.
CommentsFor the latest Fields of Dreams update check out the March 15 article in this website.
CommentsI know all that from that article, but I'm still curious as to where we stand with the Cubs donation, as well as what is the staus of all the money I heard pledged by various politicians as well as the Board of Ed.How much money has been committed that it is realistic to think we'll receive? Is there any chance that anything will happen this year ?
CommentsI don't know the answer to your questions. If I were to guess it looks like the Cubs funding is still in the works and they haven't negotiated a final deal. It looks like a lot of it had to do with gettign additonal funding besides the Cubs. the Cubs will only do a partial funding but there needs to be a match by other groups in order for the Cubs to move forward......As for the NFL grant, things will start rolling with refrubishing the field to add turf. I'd expect that to start rolling along by summer. As for your other questions, I'm only speculating that those things won't be done until we get funding and we don't have all the funding in place right now. It all takes time. Last year we added lights, this year we'll get the turf, the year after that we'll probably get the baseball stadium, and then go from there.... For a better and more upto date answere i would probably talk to Maore Goss, she is the head of the Fields of Dreams Committee. her contact info is: Marie Goss..... mgoss@lanetechfieldsofdreams.com 312-856-8275
CommentsIt seems all these grants seem to be a lot of smoke being blown up people's rear ends just to make things look good. Is it a coincidence that a lot of people in power are real estate people or have a vested interest????
CommentsThe field of dreams isn't just about the football and baseball team. At least they had fields to play on. The softball has to walk all the way to Horner Park for their home games. And last year they played all of their games on the road. Also the soccer, tennis, and lacrosse have no field no play on. I think the Field of Dreams committe is just wasting their time and money if only they are going to spend the money on football and baseball. There are other deserving teams at Lane that win championships!
CommentsI say lay off the football and baseball teams. At least, they have supporters in the trenches. Where are the blowheart supporters of the softball, soccer, tennis, and lacrosse teams. I know where they are at. They're sitting and complaining about how they never get anything and how things are unfair. But, they never do any work to get anything.
CommentsThe Chicago Sun-times in their girls soccer preview the other day stated that Whitney Young, Payton, and Schurz will be the main powers from the Public League. They said that because those teams have 7 club players on their roster. I think the Sun-times has clearly overlooked Lane Tech girls soccer team. Yes, Lane graduated Jackie Vera who is probably one of Lane's best girls soccer players ever who now plays for Loyola. But the Sun-Times is forgetting that we have a couple club players as well. Also, we are the defending city champs. We will let our play on the filed determine who is the best team.
Commentstodays game v.s. gordon tech has been cancelled due to poor field conditions at lane no date has been set as of yet to reschedule Jeff Szukala Lane Tech Baseball
CommentsLane Tech boys volleyball team is not getting much publicity this year. Much of that has to do with the development year we had last year. Lane lost to upstart Northside Prep early in the Public League playoffs and could not defend their city championship win from 2005. Lincoln Park ended up winning the city championship last year. However, Lincoln Park graduated one of it's top players Kim. Lane returns 6-1 senior outside hitter Angel Arce and 5-6 senior setter Efrain Ortiz. This will be the second year as head coach of former Lane assistant coach Steve Kenmotsu. Kenmotsu should have pleny of other talent besides Ortiz and Arce; for Lane won the city championship on the sophomore level last year.
CommentsHasn't anyone learned yet that freshmen and sophmore city championships mean nothing !Stop basing this years varsity outlooks on what those players did on the lower levels !
CommentsFeshman and sophomore team success absolutely mean something. Guess who will compromise half of the vsrsity this year. That's right, the sophomores from last year. But you're right there are other factors. One of the biggest factors is the number of players on your team playing club volleyball or whatever the sport. Club play is expensive, it could cost a parent $2,000 or so to get their child in a club sport. But the instuction is great. Practically everyone on Lincoln Park's team plays club volleyball. I guess, they have some rich parents at Lincoln Park. It's no wonder, Lincoln Park won the city championship. We have club players as well. Plus, we have talent (form teh sophomore city championship team). Add talent and club experience together adn you should have a lethal combination on the court...... Watch out for Payton this year who has this 6'9" kid who plays club volleyball....I'm also worried about our Head Coach Kenmatsu, he only has one year of head coaching experiecne under his belt. He seems to know his stuff about volleyball but it hasn't translated to on-field results so far. He coahches both our girls and boys varsity volleyball teams and so far the girls did nto go too far last year and the boys got ousted in the first round. hopefully, his first year was a fluke for him and this year he's developed his players enough to produce on field results. Volleyball is getting really big in the city especalliy with more Public Legaue teams playing club volleyball. This year, watch out for Whitney Young, Lincoln Park, Payton, Kelvyn Park, and believe it or not Gage Park. Lane will have it's hands full in the incresingly competitive Chicago Public League boys volleyball scene.
CommentsBoys Tennis is a Spring Sport. Again, watch out for Payton. I believe Payton has won the last three City Champsionships. They will be the heavy favorite to win for the next three years. They ahve the number one ranked sophomore in the state in nationally ranked sophomore Evan King. Kins was the highest rated freshman in the state of Illinois and finishesd in the Consolation semi-finals of the state meet. King has a hot at winning state this year as a sophomore, but the comptation is fierce in Illinois. His biggest challlenges will be defending state champion Dennis Novolo of Warren, Eric Spector of Glenbrook North, and Mac McAnulty of Latin. They are all juniors.....Payton is the prohibitive favorite to win city in 2007; Payton also has junior Morris Bossen.....Lane will be battling with Morgan Park, Whitney Young, and Lincoln Park for second. Lincoln Park is led by Senior David Chodack.
CommentsI was just saying with the Field of Dreams that their main concerns should not be on only building baseball and football fields. They are a group trying to help other sports. It is very hard for other sport teams to get grants, donations, or sponsors. They are not as recongnize as football and baseball. The unrecongnize teams at Lane do deserve a field of thier own!
CommentsYes, the unrecognized teams should get fields and more access to space. But, representatives of each team should get more invloved and help the others in the trenches. Instead of standing idle and watching and waiting for others to get them what they want. Everyone wants something, but, there is work invloved and the FOD could use all the help they can get.
CommentsThere hasn't been a lot of things that all of the sports teams can do to work together. Yes there was the dinner and the dance, that was great. But if there are events for all of the teams they should know. Lately there hasn't been a lot. The football and baseball teams do things for themselves to benefit them. I think that more events should happen that involve all sport teams at Lane. Doing things in the summer would be great. This way we can get the money to make the Field of Dreams come true.
CommentsSomeone mentioned that the FOD needs lots of help. Exactly what type of help are you thinking of? On top of my mind here are just some of the things: 1) attend FOD committee meetings (but when and where are they I don't think they are published anywhere) 2) encourage alumni and others to attend our 2nd annual open house this May (last year the school collected $$$ from Alumni that attended) 3) goto events to encourage the alumni and supporters (e.g. the free concert this Friday, March 23, 2007 to dedicate the new Auditorium seats that were funded by Alumni and other contriubutors 4) volunteer for the open house this May. (Last year the football booster club was there, the swim team coach was there, the choir was there, Lettermen's club, etc) but we could have used even greater support from the rest of the Lane community. Lots of Lane Alumni we're present and lots of them were giving money....... The FOD and Lane Tech needs more help. Can anyone care to give more suggestions on how someone can help? I don't want to hear somehting like " if you want to help then go and do it"; I want real concrete examples like I've given above where people can actually help. I think people genuinely want to help.

CommentsI'm glad people are finally starting to talk about what the FOD is about. Since I've been a Committee member from the start of the FOD, I'll try to answer some of the questions. First, there was an effort about 8-9 years ago to get a FOD started then but that fizzled out after a short time. Exactly what the Board wanted. The Football Booster Club then experimented with temporary lights and saw that people responded to night games and the idea came up of raising funds for permanent lights and fixing the back field. Both on Board property. Then rumors of the UPS land, west of the stadium, began surfacing. Rich Rio then approached a few parents about lobbying the Board for purchase of the property and also fixing the whole stadium. When the Board stiffed us at the meeting the FOD was formed. At first there were many people involved. Then the Board did what they did the last time and people started dropping off. Remember that the FOD has had 3 Chairpersons so far. Fortunately, there was a hard core of 10-15 people that refused to go away. Yes, you heard me right, 10-15 people out of thousands in the Lane Tech Community. The Board started to have meetings with us. They were very lively meetings and we kept telling the Board that we weren't going away. They reneged on every deal that first year. We formulated a strategy, that I will not get into until after all this is over with. We stuck with it. Soon we had two politicians big time in our corner, Bradley and Lavar. Bradley worked real hard for funds which we received from himand others, that by agreement has to go to the Board. The property was bought by the Park District with TIF money. It is Park District/City of Chicago property now. So that stopped the Condos. The Committee then decided that the Board needed to be pushed (to use a politically correct word) and that buying permanent lights first would show the Board that the FOD was for real. When the Lane Tech Century Foundation and the Football Booster Club bought the lights and paid for the installation without a cent from the Board, the Board finally realized that they had to play ball. The next meeting was with attorneys. Right then and there the FOD knew that there was no turning back for the Board. Because of the meeting the NFL Grant became a possibility. The Board also said that they would allocate 1.9 million for the stadium and that was it. As you all know, the NFL Grant came through. While we waited for news of the NFL Grant more coaches became involved, specifically, Kris Roof, Drew Brogan, and the Soccer Coach (although I haven't seen him at recent meetings). Through the efforts of Kris Roof and Rich Rio, we're close to a deal for funding for a track. It's not official so we don't announce things until they are official (signed documents versus oral committments). The FOD then reached out to the Baseball Booster Club and after several meetings, I believe, a very strong alliance has been formed. The FOD expects to have an announcement shortly on more progress. However, we will not do so until all parties have agreed which includes the Lane Tech Administration. So have patience. This all takes time with different organizations wanting different things. Let me address some of the questions of the girls softball field and the Park District property. I can personally say that I think it's a travesty that our girls have no where to play. From day one, the FOD has demanded a field for the girls. We hope that the field will be placed on the bought property. There is no room in the back unless we are allowed to go on the bought property. I also have to add, while the FOD has always fought for a girls field, not one parent or the coach has participated in this long and hard process. As far as fundraising. The FOD hopes to raise 50,000.00 by selling tickets to a raffle. We will finalize this raffle within a week. We will put it out and the FOD expects that the Alumni will respond to this raffle. Alumni, it's time to step up! We also hope to have a BBQ for everyone before school ends. Details to follow soon. We hope to make more money there. Finally, a special thanks goes to the Alumni who donated the half million dollars to the LTCF. Without this, those permanent lights would not have been installed that quickly to get the ball rolling. Thank God he was an athlete at Lane. We will definitely keep you updated as things are verified. Sorry for the long post but I hope some things were cleared up. Be patient. Luis Muñoz Treasurer of the Fields of Dreams
CommentsI'd like to thank Luis Munoz for volunteering on his own to write the very detailed story about the Fields of Dreams Committee. It is a story that many in the Lane community including myself have not heard of yet completely. Personally, I am very proud of all the efforts the Fields of Dreams Committee has done so far and I support future progress. --- Neil Hernandez, Publisher
Commentsother ideas......Taste of Lane Tech.....make all facilities rentable year-round, including the auditorium and split profits with CPS as Lane Students and Parents run the operations....
CommentsGood job Luis , I think things have been made a lot clearer for a lot of people. All this FOD stuff is for the good of all athletes at Lane, not just this team or that team. . It's a big project and I kinow it's been a lot of work for all those involved.Keep up the good work, I know you guys will get there eventually.Hopefully sooner then later. Dennis

CommentsCongratulations to Lane Tech Senior Shelton Jackson for making the Pioneer Press All-Area first team in boys basketball....Congratulations to Mary Denewitz (guard) for making the All-area 1st team and to Tiffany Jackson (guard) for making the third team in girls basketball.
CommentsI am also a member of the FOD and what Luis said is absolutely true. We are trying to get fields for ALL of our athletes. It was never our intention when we formed the committee almost two years ago to single out only the football and baseball players. We wanted better playing conditions for everyone. We have worked hard to get where we are today, and as we have promised before, we will not stop until our Lane Tech students get what they deserve. I would also like to thank everyone that has donated, supported, and offered to help us. Together we can make a difference. Kim Camacho "83"
CommentsObtaining funding will be a crtical component to building the new fields. One source of funds is grants. There are companies that provide grants. One of them is Hamburger Helper grant that can be found at www.MyHomeTownHelper.com. The Lane Tech baseball booster club has applied for this grant. But they need support from the Lane Tech community by adding a comment to the site. CommentsThe Chicago Sun-Times has the girls and boys track team for Lane Tech ranked #9 in the Chicago area. I agree, we have good track teams this year. But to be ranked number #9 in the Chicago area may be a bit of a stretch. Last year, the teams scored 0 points at the state track meet. This year, we have not had any super star transfers come in from other schools. I think the Sun-Times is basing it on some indoor performances that the team has done so far. We have this super sophomore sprinter Idia Omiagate who has stepped up from last year, hurdler Morgan Monore who is one of Lane's all time best hurdlers (and swimmers), Nia Muhhammed (hurdler), Stephanie Huighes (3200 meter run, 1600 meter run)and Margie Zimoch who is emerging as a very good long jumper. Omiagate and Monore have solid shots at scoring points for Lane this year at the state track meet. But we haven't really beaten anyone signinficant yet. They have the girls team ranked ahead of Palatine, York, New Trier, Naperville Central, Sandburg, Downers Grove South. To me that is a bit of a stretch, bu twe will know for sure after one or two outdoor meets.....The boys teams have the following individuals who are city championship contenders and may even be contenders to score points at state: Gerald Turner (hurdles), Jay Jordan (hurdles), Kenny Blanks (200 meter dash), Kevin Beltran (800 meter run), Christopher Kyles (100 meter dash); Fuad Salami (sprints), Tory MacAllister (Long Jump).....It looks like it will be a dogfight with Lane and Morgan Park for the girls city championship, with a slight edge for Lane due to greater depth and better field events.... On the boys side, Mather will be the biggest contender for Lane for the city championship. Mather is an emerging track and field program in the Public League. They have already beaten Lane for the 2006 city cross country championship. They may not have enough depth to eclipse Lane for the 2007 track title but don't count them out. Outdoor track season hasn't even begun yet and there's still lot's of improvemnt to be made.....With continued improvement, there's a chance that this year's girls boys track teams will be the best track teams we have at Lane in 15 years.
CommentsThe girls softball team opens this weekend at Elmwood Park, followed by a game on Monday vs. Glenbrook South. Those two games against suburban schools will tell us right away where the girls team stands. The team is still stinging from last years' city championship loss to Taft. Plus this year they will feel the loss of graduated seniors Daniella Torres, Heather Schaefer, and Jeneane Epstein. Those we're three solid players form alst years team and provided the bulk of the offense. But our teams are always solid. Good performances against Elmwood PArk and Glenbrook South should ride the girls softabll team the whole season through. Expect to see close games this year vs suburban competition and the usual blow out games vs. Public League competition. Circle April 11 and April 12 on your calendars. Lane will have a rematch vs. teams that ended their seasons last year. The will play Taft on April 11th and New Trier, who beat Lane 1-0 last year on April 12.
CommentsBoys volleyball team will play Payton: 3/29/2007 Lane Tech 4:00pm at Payton. This will be a big game for both teams. Payton has this 6'9" monster club player. Lane has to win this game to show it' s back in contention for the Public Leauge after losing in the first round of the Public Leage playoffs last year.
CommentsDale DeVinney, Mather's boys cross-country and track coach, has completely turned around the track and cross country program at Mather. Prior to his arrival, Mather didn't even have a cross country program and their track team was a bottom dweller. Ever since he arrived Mather has seen a resurgence in boys cross country. They won the city title last year by upsetting Lane Tech in the freshman, sophmore, and varsity levels. That is a clean sweep over a school twice it's size. Now he is carrying over his coaching expertise to the boys track team. Mather is improving every week of the season. They will challenge Lane Tech for the Public Leauge city title in 2007.

CommentsSprinters Fuad Salami and Christopher Kyles are studs. Christpher Kyles is only a sophmore and is already one of the top 3 sporinters in the city and has a chance to be one of the fastest in teh state with greater improvement by senior year. Hurdler Gerald Turner has a chance to finish in the top 5 in the state this year!!!!
CommentsSophomore Rashe’e Allen is a HUGE asset to Lanes Track Team too. Rashe’e deserves to be mentioned. As well. He is also a talented Football player as well. Rashe'e, Chris K. and Fraud are really great runners!
CommentsLane Tech's baseball team showed that it is a team in contention to go far with a victory over #14 ranked Oak Park 3-1 on Saturday. They also lost a close game to a good Evanston team 4-3.
CommentsThe unofficial Indoor State Track championship will be held this coming weekend (Sat, March 31, 2007) at Illinois Weslyeyan University. Individuals must meet qualifying times in order to run this race. The Lane Tech girls team qualified several individuals and will compete this Saturday. The following girls will be compete for Lane: Margie Zimoch (Long Jump), Idia Omogiate (55 meter dash, 200 meter dash), Nia Muhammed (55 meter hurdles), and Morgan Monroe (800 meter run). Usually, a good performance at this event versus other top tier compettion is a good early indication of success at the state outdoor meet in May.... The Lane Tech girls track team has always been a top 3 city track team performer but since 1994 we have only scored points at the state meet once when we scored 15 points en route to a 16th place state finish in 2004-05.....If the girls show some more improvement as the season progresses, Lane has a chance to score some points at this years state meet....So far this 2006-07 school year no Lane Tech sports have scored points at the state meet. So far this school year only our boys bowling team (23rd place) and chess team (27th place) have had a state finish.... The girls track team in 2007 has a chance of become Lane Tech's most successful team as far as far as state meet finish!!

CommentsThe Lane Tech girls lacrosse team finished a very impressive 11-5-1 overall record last year including wins against suburban teams Fremd, Regina Dominican, and Naperville North. An argument acan be made that the girls lacrosse team is the most competitive sports program at Lane vs. Suburban opponents. Tell me another sport at Lane that can beat Fremd, Regina, and Naperville North.

CommentsThe girls soccer team has started out the season winless in it's first three games with a 0-2-1 record including losses to Maine West and to a very good Payton team 4-0. Payton is one of the favorites this year due to their nucleus of mainly sophomore all-city players returning. Meanwhile, Lane's team is also very young and they face a rebuilding year without the services of graduated star Jackie Vera. Vera has to one of Lane's best all-time girls soccer players and is currently playing for Division I Loyola University.

CommentsScoreboard:.... Girls Soccer Whitney Young - 3, Lane Tech 1.... Lane Tech girls soccer team is now 0-3-1. The Chicago SunTimes wrote an article about this game. Check it out on today's Sun-Times.
CommentsCoach Ricks, read the Sun Times article. Club players on Young as well as Payton and Lincoln Park, all 3 beat us easily. You won't be able to compete if you don't get some of the club players to come to Lane. Most of your players are not soccer fit or ready to play against that type of experience. Start walking the halls looking for some athletes.
CommentsWOW!!! NO RIO OR BRADY POSTS????
CommentsWow do you sit up nights waiting for Rio or Brady posts to try and think of something smug to write ?
CommentsGive coach Ricks a break. He's done an excellent job as Lane's girls soccer coach. He win city about every other year for Lane's soccer programs. This is a rebuilding year for the girls soccer team. He has some club players but he also has a very young team. Give this team some time to develop. Although, I do admit he held girls soccer tryouts a little bit late. While other schools already had their tryouts and team conditioning. He was still holding tryouts. So he was few days late. But his record stands for itself. Lane is huge school and girls soccer is getting popular. Lane is abig school with a lot of people he should find and develop some talent with all those kids. Come on, Lane's auditorium and cafetaria alone is about the size of the whole school of Payton.
Commentsnope, just wait for you to pop off and reply with more nonsense and keep the ball rolling
CommentsGreetings: I am Xavier Manrique, asst. coach on the varsity squad. As you probably already know, Jazzy Camacho and Jackie Manrique pitched a combined no-hitter against Von Steuben on Tuesday, March 29, 2007, and won 12-0. Along with this pitching gem, Daniella Torres and Maria Joyce had 3 hits each, included with a homer apiece. Other hitting stars were Rebecca Cavanaugh, Samantha Nikolich, & Bernadette Hansen along with both pitchers. It also was a complete team defensive effort, especially by catcher Denise Bilski. Way to open the season, and against what the Chicago Sun-Times mentioned as one of the top area pitchers – Benton of Von Steuben! Checkout the team website: www.niksports.com/indexLaneVSB7.asp .....Xavier "X" Manrique
CommentsTrack and Field Lane Tech Relays * Friday, March 30, 3:00pm * Hansen Stadium This is the first outdoor meet of the season. Lane Tech will not run it's "A" team since many of them are running this Saturday at the Illinois Prep Top Times unoffical indoor state championship. Most, if not all of the teams participating will be Chicago Public League schools. Even thought we are not running our top runners, I expect Lane to finish among the top teams. The Public League just does not have enough depth this year. There are a few individual stars but team wise expect only serious competition from Mather and Lane for the boys and Morgan Park and Lane for the girls.

CommentsI have a Rio and Brady Post...As we all know Lane athletic director Rich Rio fired head sophomore football coach Dennis Brady at the end of the football season last year. Also let go was Dennis Brady's entire coaching staff with one exception. Nick Rio, the son of Rich Rio was not fired. What does that tell you? Brady was not fired due to his on field success. Rather it was a difference of opinion with Rio. Rio kept his son, but not Brady or the rest of his staff. I'm not second guessing Rio's decision. He did what he felt he had to do. But I just wanted to tell everyone that it had nothing to do with Brady's performance. Looking at it from Brady's perspective I think it is a good thing for Brady, because if I were Brady, I would not want to work in a situation where there is so much differences in philosophy between himself and his boss. We will see what happens. As of now, I have not heard of new sophomore coach. I do know that Rio needs to hire or appoint someone soon.

CommentsFrom what I hear, there will be no sophmore football coach or staff next year. All the sophs will be put with the varsity and coached by the varsity staff. Some sophs will play varsity, some jv and some in soph games.Smart decision ? Don't know. But it sure isn't the way most of the better programs in the state (not the Chicago public league)do it.
CommentsWhy is there still talk about football going on? All the Sping sports are thriving at Lane and should be talked about, not football and the problems they have with their coaches and former coaches.
CommentsSince the Benz brothers graduated, the sports they played in have done nothing in the State. They were from the suburbs. So what does that tell you.
Comments"Since the Benz brothers graduated, the sports they played in have done nothing in the State. They were from the suburbs. So what does that tell you." It tells me that you'd rather complain about what's wrong rather than cheer for what's right.

CommentsIt is called diversity , not fairness.
CommentsBaseball score: Lane Tech 12- Curie 1---Lane Tech beats up on a Public League foe.
CommentsIn the past Lane accepted kids if they lived north of Roosevelt Rd. Then they changed it to where you could live anywhere in Chicago. But there is still some kind standard to get into Lane. Ideally, Lane looks at at the factors that really matter to excel as a student. These factors should include grades, test scores, attendance, extracuricular involvement, etc. I really hope that whoever decides admission into Lane Tech do not take into account factors such as race, where the student lives, or economics. Those factors should have no relevance in admitting students to Lane. Grades, tesct scores, and extracuricular involvement are much much more important indicators of a student that will excel at Lane.
CommentsI think when you look at the demographics of CPS, you'll find the caucasians comprise less than 10% of students. And, if more of them were admitted to Lane, there would be an uproar across the system. Without a doubt, diversity is looked at when admitting students to Lane. It's too bad parents of students rejected can't find out the scores of other students making it into Lane compared to their child. I'm willing to bet, the parents would find some interesting admittances.
CommentsLane doesn’t have a large amount of blacks/African American either, Lane is majority Hispanic/Latino the new minority. I hope this site doesn’t start the race game. That is the last thing Lane needs, .is to have a race war! There are too many other unaddressed and relevant issues that Lane needs to address as a school.
Commentsscrew diversity ....if you really want racism to stop then you have to stop this diversity bul****because thats what keeps it goin ....who cares whose the first black to do this or the first hispanic or white to do that ......**** that ...thats what keeps racism goin .....lane should be the smartest and best at sports and if you wanna do that then accept all the smartest kids period

CommentsI am a former lane tech wrestler that graduated in 03 and caught a glimpse of the the greatness of the time. I am sure that things have since continued. i am glad to know that there is site as organized and dedicated to Lane Tech sports. for all you youngsters.....YOU WILL REMEMBER THESE SPORTS FOREVER!!!!!.....It is hard to forget. jr class of 03
Commentslooks like a common theme, boys sports can only beat up on cps schools, outside of cps baseball not to good. the best baseball team in the city is clemente.
CommentsI disagree about your misguidede conclusion about hte boys teams only beating CPS teams. Boys track (Conant, St, Charles, North, etc), boys lacrosse, baseball (vs Oak Park, Morton), Wrestling (Elk Grove Village), boys basketball (Waukegan), boys soccer (Glenbard North, Lincoln Way East) all have proven they can and have beaten non-CPS team. Anyone, boys and girls, wearing Myrtle and Gold have proven they can compete with suburban teams. Lane Tech is a city school that plays like a suburban program. No other CPS school is even close to the level of play that Lane performs in a wide specturm of sports. Clemente may have a good baseball team. But when was the last time you ever heard of their swimming, track, lacrosse, football, or any other of their teams? This year they happen to be blessed with three DI players, but they won't have that every year. Whereas with Lane we produce good baseball team wheter we have DI players or not.
CommentsGirls Softball Lane Tech 15 Evanston 1 Lane Tech 6 Elk Grove Village 0 Those are two scores the Lane Tech girls softball team has put up the last two years. Can any other Lane Tech team say they can beat Evanston and Elk Grove Village in their perspective sports? Not too many. The girls softball team starts with their head coach, Brent Bradish. He is from the Northwest suburbs and attended Rolling Meadows High School. So he adds to Lane Tech a suburban school perspective. I've also heard his students love him as a history teacher at Lane. Anyone who's ever watched a Lane Tech girls softball game will notice how serious the team is by their warm-ups. It is so organized and well run. Watching the team warm up you see a warm up with not one second being wasted. Every second is being used in an organized and deliberate manner. It almost seems like a Major League baseball team out there is warming up. I have not been to a team practice but if their practice is anywhere close to how they warm up it is no wonder the girls softball teams are a very fundamentally sound group..... Then during the game it is the same way. The team is known to be very good defensively and does not get rattled even when they are behind. Again, I attribute those fine characteristics to good coaching. By the way, you will also regularly see Bradish with 3 assistant coaches at girls softball games. They are Howard Newman, George Stravakas, and Xavier Manrique. They are a very organized bunch...... The Lane Tech girls softball team has succeeded despite having no on site softball fields at Lane. they have to travel to Horner Park for practice. In the meantime, they play most of their game in immaculate suburban parks designed specifically for softball. Some parks, like when Lane played Rolling Meadows, even have lights... FOR SOFTBALL!....... So considering the adversity that the Lane girls softball team has done, this is a very organized, fundamentally sound team. They do not complain, have the best Lane Tech team website (check them out at http://www.niksports.com/indexLaneVSB7.asp , and just keep producing good teams every year. This is a model program every team at Lane can learn from.
CommentsDoes anybody know about the movie they're making at Lane? I heard that the people are tearing up the stadium. They're going to put in new turf and a track. But is that the FOD or the movie makers???
CommentsYou guys should have something on the boys varsity lacrosse team.

CommentsBIG girls softball game this Thursday, April 12, 4:30pm at New Trier. Girls softball is the only sport where New Trier will play Lane in the regular season. Last year, Lane lost to state 4th place finisher New Trier 1-0 in the state playoffs. This game will show the world where Lane Tech stands. If my memory serves me correct Lane Tech has never beaten New Trier in any sport (outside of chess) in at least 10 years. New Trier is the benchmark for high school sports excellence. Prediction: Lane 1 New Trier 0
CommentsBoys Volleyball...Lane d. CommentsArticle from Pioneer Press on Mather victory at the Mather track invitational:...... Rangers shine on cold and cloudy day...... April 11, 2007 By ROB VALENTIN | Sports Editor..... There was no way Mather's boys track team was going to lose their one home meet this season. ...... The Rangers didn't disappoint as they battled some tough weather conditions and cruised to the team title at the 2007 Mather Invitational at River Park last Saturday. ..... There were plenty of solid efforts but perhaps the most remarkable was JoVahn Martinez. The North Side isn't known for sprinters but the senior is changing that. ..... Martinez won the 100 (11.61) and the 200 (23.57) and anchored the winning 400 relay team (44.98). Martinez also anchored the 800 relay team to a second place finish (1:35.52). "It's about the work ethic," Martinez said. "We're more dedicated than before. A lot of people think North Side teams don't have speed but we have a lot of guys who have been working hard and now it's paying off." ...... Martinez and Mather have some pretty lofty expectations to live up to, especially after a Chicago Sun-Times preseason article ranked the Rangers as one of the best 10 teams in the Chicagoland Area. ...... "We're handling that really well," Martinez said. "We're not cocky and we know whatever level you're on there's always a next level you can get to." Leading Mather in the distance events was Carlos Hernandez. The senior picked up victories in the 1600 (4:55.16) and the 3200 (10:31.4). "I took first place in the two-mile and I hadn't run it since last year so it went pretty well," Hernandez said. "After that I was kind of tired going into the mile but I still got first place. I kind of just kept pace with Lane Tech (runner Joel Wojcik, who finished second) and then I took it." Hernandez also stepped up when a member of the 1600 relay team had to drop out. Hernandez ran the anchor leg and took the baton with a two-second lead, only to increase the advantage to 11 seconds as Mather won in a time of 3:42.35. ..... "It was really cold and I wasn't expecting to run three races but it was my last home meet and it felt good to go out with three gold medals," Hernandez said. Another big contributor for Mather was the very versatile Edwin Moreno. The senior took first place in the shot put with a throw of 44-feet 2-inches. Moreno also grabbed second place in the discus (127-8). "It was extremely hard with the wind blowing and with the shot put being metal it gets really cold," Moreno said. "And your muscles are really cold. You just try to move around and keep warm. But my throw in the discus was a personal best for this year by 10 feet." Moreno's most impressive performance had nothing to do with throwing. The 6-foot 1-inch 205-pound football player also ran the second leg of the victorious 400 relay team. ..... "My coach was getting a lot of compliments about the big kid in the backstretch who was running pretty fast," Moreno said with a laugh. "It is pretty rare to see someone be successful in the shot, discus and 4x1. Moreno enjoys running with the speedsters and wouldn't trade it for anything. "I practice with the sprinters and I worked hard to get into that spot," Moreno said. "I didn't do track before high school. I was on the football team and my coach talked about me being a thrower. Then coach saw how fast I could run." ...... Now that Mather has this meet behind them they will begin the drive towards the almighty dream: winning a city title over rival Lane Tech. ..... Saturday's meet could have been a preview of what's to come but Lane held almost all of their top athletes back and Mather kept some kids off the track as well. ...... "There's no way we're going to run our best teams against each other until the city meet," Rangers head coach Dale DeVinney said. "There's only going to be one round in this heavyweight fight and that's the city meet." ...... The Rangers would love to knock off Lane but they're keeping their focus on looking in the mirror. ...... "I'm not worried about Lane because I have to be worried about us sticking together," Moreno said. "We need to come to every practice and keep working hard." ...... Still, there's no looking past what it would mean to knock off the city's biggest and most storied school. "In my four years we've only beaten them twice and that was during cross country," Hernandez said. "In track it takes so many people in so many events that it would be great. We're working really hard to be able to do it and it would be a great victory." *************************************************** Records fall There were plenty of other impressive performances at the Mather Invitational. Lane Tech's Sam Pellegrino set a meet record in the discus with a throw of 133-9 while Tory McAlister won the 300 hurdles in a time of 44.01. Prosser's Sorhando Peter also picked up a meet record in the 400 with a time of 51.59, pretty impressive when taking into account the 32 degree temperatures. "I was excited because I haven't run in a long time. Then I got outside," Peter said. "You just have to have a strong mental state of mind." After taking 11th at state in the 400 last year Peter has some lofty goals. After all, only four of the 10 runners who beat him last year return this season. "I want to get Downstate in as many events as possible," Peter said. "And I want to win state. It's my last year and I want to go as far as possible." Prosser was also led by David Mitchell who took second in the 200 (23.93). Northtown Academy's Craig Schinter had a solid day taking second place in the 110 hurdles (17.38) and 300 hurdles (44.11). **************************************** Mustangs improve In the team competition Northside turned it a pretty impressive performance by taking fourth place, one year after finishing 13th. Leading the way was Geoff Edwards in the 400 (3rd, 55.16) and 200 (4th, 24.52) "Basically, I was just thinking of trying to finish the race," Edwards said. "Once you finish it you feel so much better." Other key contributors for Northside were Jonathan Kittaka in the 3200 (3rd, 10:39.64) and 1600 (4th, 5:01.73) and Preston Buehrer in the 100 (4th, 12.31) and 1600 (7th, 5:15.13). "This week was spring break but the kids were at practice every day working towards state sectionals," Mustangs head coach Jon Gordon said. "They don't want to miss a day of practice and we're seeing school records broken every week."
CommentsPioneer Press Article on the girls performance at the Mather track and Field Invitational ..... Lane cruises to team title.... In the team competition Lane Tech easily won the title with 108.5 points. Mather was second with 76.5 and Northside College Prep was third with 67. The Indians win was extremely impressive considering they held out almost all of their top runners for fear of injury in the bad conditions. Picking up wins for the Indians were Sharonda Polk in the 300 hurdles (55.34), Stephanie Pineda in the 800 (2:36.47) and Shanita Polk in the shot put (29-4.5). Lashell Holmes of Steinmetz set a meet record in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-feet for first place. Mather took home first in the 3200 relay (11:25.17), while Monica Rodriguez nabbed first in the 3200 for the Rangers with a time of 12:49.92. ******************************* Mustangs improve The biggest improvement in the team competition went to Northside College Prep. The Mustangs took 12th last year and jumped all the way to third this time around. Leading the way was Kelly Varney, who won the discus with a school-record throw of 72-1. Varney also took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 24-2.25. Other key contributors were Kaitlyn Renkosiak in the shot put and discus, Anna Parks in the 1600 and Monica Laytham in the 800. "There's been more dedication to training," Mustangs head coach Jon Gordon said. "If they're going to miss a practice they come in at six in the morning to practice. And we trained in this type of weather when we ran in January and February so that really paid off in this type of meet."

Mather wants nothing more that to topple off Lane Tech...3. Morgan Park- Defeated Sprint rich Leo last weekend. So they are a serious top 2 threat in the city.Their speed alone may be enough to overtake Mather. 4. Whitney Young-Depaul bound distance star Griffin Lawler needs some help in sprint if Whitney is to challenge for a top 2 spot in the city.-----Others to watch: Robeson, Lincoln Park, Marshall, Northside Prep, Prosser

CommentsThe record 3.5 inches of snow cancelled all outdoor games yesterday and all games will probably be cancelled today (thursday). This includes the girls softball game vs New Trier today. The girls laccrosse game yesterday vs Nequa Valley was also cancelled. Too bad we missed those games because it is rare that Lane plays teams of that caliber. Last weekeend the girls soccer team got clobbered 10-0 vs Glenbrook North. The girls lacrosse and girls softball teams are very competitive and I felt there was a chance we could have upset either New Trier or Nequa Valley.
CommentsThe boys and girls track team will send it's "A" team at the midwest prep invitational in Indiapolis this Saturday. Last year the girls finished 10th out of 28 teams and the boys finished 9th out of 30 teams. Look for big points scred from whoever runs the 100 meter dash for Lane on the boys side. It could be Fuad Salami, Kenny Blanks, Christopher Blackmon or someone else running the 100. Also look out for Gerald Turner in hurdles. The girls will count on big points from Idia Omiagate in sprints, Morgan Monroe in hurdles (she finsihed 2nd to state champ Shalina Clarke of Evanston last year), Margie Zimoch in jumps, and Stephanie Hughes in distance. Look for the boys to improve on their 22 points they scored last year and score in the 30's. The girls scored 21 points last year. This year, they may hit the 30's as well.
CommentsThe Lane Tech Boys Varsity Lacrosse team is now 6-0. They defeated Northside College Prep 14-2 today at Hanson Stadium. Their next game is on Saturday and will be hosting Madison High School from Wisconsin at MAX McCook 4750 Vernon Avenue McCook, IL 60525
CommentsBoys Volleyball....Young d. Lane 19-25, 25-18, 25-18.....In this matchup between clearly the top 2 teams in the Public League, Whitney Young showed that they are now the favorite to win next months city championship. This victory over Lane tech was gigantic. Lane Tech must now find a way to regroup itself after a devastating loss.
CommentsHispanic American athletes are making a huge impact on Lane Tech athletics. Edwin Rodriguez is our best soccer player, Daniella Torres is our best softball player, Sophia Lugo is our bet lacrosse player, Kevin Beltran is the defending city champion in the 800 meters for track. What makes Lane great is that generally at Lane race is not an issue. What is most important is what people do. We do have our coveted International Days that has been a ling time tradition at Lane (for at least the last 25 years). But that is a celbration of culture not race. Lane, like mos tof the rest of America is heading in the right direction when it comes to race. As time passes more people recognize that while we are all different, what we have to look at is what we have in common. At Lane the goal is to live on our tradition of the school of champions. We are not tied down in racial politics, diversity, set asides, affirmative action, or anything else that does nto add value. the student are there to have fun and learn; the teachers are there to teach, and hopefully along the way we can all grow as individuals. Let's all live responsibily and be the best that we can become.

CommentsFor the first time in about four years the JV girls softball team loss to a city school. Northside beat Lane 18-3
CommentsThat'll be occuring more in the future. Because Lane is upping the academic requirements to enroll, which is a great thing. But it, in the long run, is deteriorating the competitiveness of Lane sports. Lane's JV teams that dominate only dominate in sports where there is a significant percentage of underclassmen athletes on the varsity level (ie football and volleyball). For a JV team to get destroyed by a city school's JV team is just an insight to the future of the competitiveness of Lane sports.

CommentsBoys Lacrosse will play Libertyville tomorrow (417/07)night at Lane Stadium. This is the first ever boys lacrosse night game at Lane stadium history. Lane Tech is 7-0 but most of their victories have come against weak Public League opponents. Libertyville will be Lane's first legitamate lacrosse program. Thus, this game will immediatley tell the world where Lane Tech lacrosse stands. A blow out by Libertyville will just expose Lane's 7-0 record as a fluke. A good showing, not necessarily a win will tell everyone that Lane Tech has arrived in the Lacrosse world. Thus, this game has a gigantic impact. A win gives Lane credibility, a poor performance, will say that we have a long ways to go before we can say we are a real lacrosse program. I'm confident the guys will perform. The game is at home, it's the first night game; Libertyville has been known to show up late for games. So maybe the long bus ride from Libertyville will get them tired. What ever happens, this is statement game for Lane. Good luck Indians.
CommentsGirls Soccer- Von Steuben 3, Lane 1....(Lane is now something like 1-7-1) this loss to Von Stueben really is a big statement of how far the talent level for girls soccer has fallen at Lane this year. This is truly a rebuilding year for Lane Tech girls soccer.
CommentsGirls Softball- Lane 10 Schurz 0- Lane is playing their Public League conference part of the schedule. Look for more blowouts just like this game vs Public League opponents for the next week or so. However, we do still have some good non-conference games remaning vs. teams like Niles North. Our big measuring stick games vs. New Trier and Taft we're cancelled due to the weather last week, so it's hard to say exaclty where this team stands. But so far, it looks like we are solid. We have good pitching and fundamental defense. I would not count Lane out of going far in the state playoffs. The state playoff teams were announced. We are in the same sectional as New Trier, so this year it may come down to another Lane Tech vs. New Trier clash in the playoffs.
CommentsPublic League Girls soccer rankings: 1. Payton 2. Lincoln Park 3. Whitney Young 4. Schurz
CommentsThe boys track team will be running at the Evanston Quad meet tonight (tue). This will be their third outdoor meet. But the first one against a strong suburban team like Evanston. This meet will be a good guage of where our sprinters are compared to suburban schools. Evanston features sprinter Michael Bolden who torched our football team for 4 TD's last fall.
CommentsThe girls softball team will be playing Wheeling, Maine South, Niles North, and Loyola within the next 7 days. This is their toughest stretch of games. There is no other sport at Lane outside of track and field and baseball that plays the level of competition against suburban opponents as does the girls softball team plays. If Lane can play competitive against these 4 teams then, it is a strong indication of how serious our girls softball team is. We've already beaten Elk Grove Village this year but that was against Elk Grove's 2nd best pitcher. This stretch of games is our test to see what we are made of.

CommentsI personally think the Lane Tech Wrestling Team and the Baseball team competes with a tougher schedule than the Softball team, although Softball does have a tough schedule. The only public league schools these Lane teams play are the ones in conference which they have to. (and the wrestling team even practice afterwards.) The Lane Softball team has quite a few public league schools in the mix with the many suburban schools in the schedule as confidence boosters and record inflators. But anyways, competing against suburban schools is necessary, but not all suburbans schools live up to the hype city kids especially Lane kids make them out to be. Schools like Elk Grove would be considered above an average city school in most sports and a lower tier suburban school. The Baseball team loads their schedules with State Ranked Teams so being 10-8 with a stacked schedule would be respectable although not acceptable to them. Also some of the outstanding Lane Wrestlers (Barfield, Koverko, Williams) got to compete and hang with state ranked and even some nationally ranked kids in tournaments in which they easily pinned SUBURBAN school kids in the first couple of rounds. Respect all Fear None. Thats the mentalility Lane sports need when they compete in tough scheds. vs. "Suburban Schools". Not all of them have that.
CommentsI agree that Baseball and wrestling plays tough schedules but can they say they can match the following victories that the girls softball team has had this year: Lane 6 Elk Grove Village 0; Lane Tech 10 Evanston 1; Lane Tech 5 Wheeling 0.
CommentsBoys Voleyball...Lane d. Lincoln Park 26-24, 21-25, 25-12....Big win vs defending city champs. Lane has now beaten every Public foe it's played this year except for Whitney Young. It looks like the 2 big boys in volleball this year will be Lane and Whitney. Who wants it more?
CommentsBoys Lacrosse-----Libertyville 12, Lane 4--- Lane loses it's first game of the season and falls to 7-1. Next up is Oak Park.
CommentsGirls Softball---Lane 5 Wheeling 3.....Lane has now beaten Evanston, Wheeling, and Elk Grove Village this year. There is no doubt this team is for real. Niles North, Maine South, and Loyola are coming up in the next 5 days. Take 2 of 3 from those teams, and talk of advancing far in the state playoffs for the girls softball team will be a serious considerdation.
CommentsBaseball---Lane 10 Simeon 0....Ho hum another blowout vs a Public League opponent. But this was not any opponent. This was against a Simeon program that is usually very strong in baseball. Lane plays 8-2 Harlan this Friday at Lane. harlan is really good. One of the best in the Public League. Whoever wins that game will be a favorite along with Clemente to win the city championship
CommentsLane Tech Boys -Evanston features sprinter Michael Bolden was no match to any of Lane's top sprinters last night. I hope that wasn't Evanston's A teams!
CommentsLane had a great performance at the Evanston track meet last night. Lane, Whitney, Evanston, Waukegan, and Hyde Park ran the race. I'm not sure who ended up winning the meet but it was a close battle between Evanston and Lane. We had more participants than any other team at the meet. Some highlights include: 4x100 meter victory at the tape by Christopher Kyles; Evantston swept the 4x400 meter relay (which included Bolden)by winning the top two spots; hurdler Jay Jordan of Lane Tech dusted the field in the 110 meter high hurdles; freshman Kulayfi Haji finised 2nd in the 1600 meter run vs varsity runners; our frosh soph team is very deep (Thadeues Scott ran hurdles and may score points for us in hurdles for the city frosh soph championship next month); Sophome Sprinter Michael Henry also looked very strong and will help our forsh soph tema try to repeat as city champs; we had another freshman Flacko Tinajero(spelling) win the miel with a time of 5:12(?). We may have won the meet on pure depth alone. Evanston traditionally has a good track program and scored points last year at the state meet with Bolden on a relay. Hover, within their conference they are probably behind New Trier, Moane South, and Niles West. So we did well last night, but the test will come this Friday night at Highland Oark in the first "real" elite meet the boys track team will run. We're strong in sprints, but can we put it together. Look out for our 4x100, 4x200, hurdles with Jay Jordan); 100 (Fuad Salami); 200 (Fuald Salami); Discus (Sam Pelligrino); 800 (Kevin Beltran); and 1600 meter run (Kulayfi Haji) to score some pints this Friday night at Highland Park.
CommentsPioneer Press Article on Girls Softball Team------ Indians' bats starting to come around------- April 18, 2007 By MIKE LANSU Contributor Lane used a trio of pitchers and timely hitting to creep over .500 this week and remain undefeated in conference play with a pair of victories last week. The Indians remained perfect in the Red North Conference with a 10-0 win over Northside Prep Monday, April 9 in a six-inning affair. • Indians' bats starting to come around Freshman Samantha Nikolich threw a perfect game and struck out six for her first win of the season. "Samantha doesn't have as much velocity (as ace Jazzy Camacho)," Lane head coach Brent Bradish said. "She doesn't throw hard, but she has a lot of movement and a great breaking ball. She has pretty good control, especially for a freshman." Offensively, the Indians scored early and never let up. "Everyone hit well all through the lineup," Bradish said. "It was cold outside, but the girls played really well." Lane couldn't maintain an early lead in a 6-4 loss to Morton, Tuesday, April 10. The Indians scored four runs in the first inning, but couldn't score again. Camacho allowed six runs in the first three innings in her worst outing of the season. "Jazzy didn't have her stuff and that happens," Bradish said. "All great pitchers have games where they can't find the zone." Jackie Manrique didn't allow a run in five innings of relief. "With three pitchers (Camacho, Nikolich and Manrique) I think we will be in a lot of games. If one doesn't have it we can bring in the next one. And if she doesn't have it we can bring in the third one. With three pitchers you can keep their runs down, but will we be able to score against good pitching? We haven't been hitting the ball hard and we don't get a lot of extra base hits, which is fine as long a you're producing runs." Offensively, Daniella Torres had two RBI and Rebecca Cavanaugh added a triple. "Our offense came out and dominated the first inning and then went silent," Bradish said. "It was kind of like as the temperature dropped so did our bats." Camacho and the Indians responded by routing host Evanston 10-1 last Friday. Camacho rebounded after a shaky first inning and finished with 11 strikeouts in five innings. Nikolich pitched the final two innings, striking out two. "Jazzy started out with control problems in the first inning," Bradish said. "She was having a hard time finding the zone so I went out there and told her we wanted to see her get out of this jam. She did and ended up pitching a good game." Lane scored two runs in the first and never trailed. "We scored early and we just slowly kept adding them on," Bradish said. "Again it was one of those games where everybody hit well. I hope as the weather warms up we will hit more." Lane (4-3, 2-0) hopes to keep its winning streak alive when it battles Mather today and Maine South Friday. "Playing these suburban teams really helps a lot and that's why we book as many games as we can out in the suburbs," Bradish said. "That's were the better pitching is and that's what makes you a better ball club."
