New!'I'll take anyone who can walk and make him a champion'

Newton's passion undiminished after 25 state titles

Chicago Suntimes Article

Success secrets from one of the most successful coaches in history:

  1. ''It's all about setting goals and living your dream. If you can find five guys who can run 15 minutes or better for three miles in the state meet, you have a good chance to win.''

  2. identify incoming freshmen who have the potential

  3. He ask the coaches at the three junior high schools in Elmhurst to identify ''anyone who has a talent for running.'' He then mails 400 letters to invite potential runners to participate in his summer program. He usually gets 200 to 230 responses.

  4. On the first day of classes at York, Newton recruits freshmen. He dispatches some of his older runners into the halls to pitch his program to kids who have shown some interest. The next day, Newton talks to each freshman class in the gym.

  5. "I'm fair and I'm tough, and we have discipline and love every guy out there. We make everyone feel he is responsible for the state title.''

Coach Joe Newton of York High School

has won 25 state titles. Anyone interested

New!Stevenson vs. Lane Tech

It's unofficial but latest reports has Lane Tech playing at Stevenson on Friday, October 27, 2006 at 7:00pm in the first round class 8A playoff game.

Game Preview

Stevenson has lost two games this year to two very quality teams in undefeated Libertyville and speedy Lake Zurich Bears. Stevenson has a very big team and that is big as in size. They also feature a good running back in Dan Dowd who some say is still recovering from an ankle injury. Last year Stevenson was a great running team with Breckheimer and Johnson and balanced that with passing from Preston Earl.  more game previews, Stevenon pictures, and Stevenson 2006 results...

2006 Stevenson Varsity Football  Team picture. Stevenson's team lacks Division 1 talent but has a massive offensive line and is very capable of passing against opponents. Stevenson is 7-2 this year with losses against an undefeated Libertyville team and a speedy, state ranked Lake Zurich team. Lane last met Stevenson in the 2003 state playoffs when Stevenson beat Lane 23-20. In that game Lane Tech missed 3 extra points.

Lane Takes Conference Title on Senior Night

Lane Tech 29

Curie 19

(Lane Tech Stadium- Chicago, IL)   The last time Lane Tech lost it’s conference was in the 2003 football season when Steinmetz, led by star Quarterback Justin Anderson, beat a Couri Benz led Lane Tech team. Benz was one of Lane’s best all time quarterbacks. So when Curie took an early 7-0 lead on a 60 yard touchdown run by running back Darius Bell, thoughts of losing a rare conference title came to mind. However, Lane responded and scored 29 unanswered points and eventually won 29-19 more....

  • Senior night- Lane will hold a special halftime ceremony where seniors and their parents will be recognized.

  • Pre-Game Party- There will be a special pre-game party at the Lane Courtyard held by the Lane Tech Century Foundation or Fields of Dreams Committee. Local Politicians will likely attend.

  • Conference championship- The winner of this game will lay claim to the Illini-Redbird Conference championship. Curie is looking to end the Lane stranglehold of the conference the past years.
