Day of Sweeping!!

Lane Tech girls teams sweep Freshman, Frosh-Soph and Varsity events

Mather boys teams captures Freshman, Frosh-Soph and events

Lane Tech boys finish 2nd in all events.

(Promontory Point- Chicago, IL) In a day filled with close races Lane Tech girls teams took the Public League championships in all three events for the girls side and Mather did the same for the boys side. Lane Tech started the day with a first place finish by freshman Richelle Cavanaugh to lead the girls freshman team to the title. Jenny Wojtas, who ran varsity races for most of the cross country season finished in 2nd place in the frosh-soph race to lead Lane's girls frosh-soph team to a victory over Morgan Park. The boys frosh-soph team finished behind Mather. It was a disappointing run for Lane's frosh-soph boys team. Eric Bose got edged out at the finish line by Mathers Mike Medina to lose the individual race. Also, the team felt the lost of sophomore Fernando Arroyo who sat out most of the cross country season due to academic reasons. Fernando ran on Lane's Frosh-Soph city championship team on 2005. Despite they beat Mather in the sectionals so to lose to them in the Finals really stung.

Lane's girls frosh-soph team beat Northside prep led by Sophmore Jenny Wojtas. There was a concern before the race of Lane winning because Shaheen Kazni, the individual winner of the sectional race from Lane Tech had to sit out this race because of an injury. However, sophomore Jenny Wojtas who ran several varsity races this year stepped up with a big 2nd place finish and the reat of Lane's pack was able to hold off Northside Prep for the victory.

Lane's girls varsity team ran a great race to upset sectional winning Northside Prep. Lane was led by individual winner Stephanie Hughes who has won the individual city championship all four of her years. This year may have been the biggest victory for Lane needed all the points it could muster as Lane edged out Northside Prep and Whitney Young by 7 points. Northside Prep ended with the same number of points as Whitney Young but took home the second place plaque as their 6th runner beat Whitney Young's 6th runner. Freshman Stephanie Pineda stepped up big for Lane Tech with a 6th place finish right behind teammate Regina Dydra(sr). Maggie Byrne also contributed big with a 10th place finish. Lane Tech has now won 5 city champions in a row in girls cross country.

Mather completed the sweep on the boys side with a 49 to 43 point victory over Lane Tech. Mather finished 6 runners ahead of Lane's 5th runner to key in the victory. Griffin Lawler of Whitney Young won the individual boys race for the second year in a row. Lane Tech assistant coach Anthony Jones felt Mather won because their runners run together. Lane head coach Kris Roof said " there's a lot of little things we can improve on, we're going to do that this week."
