Lane Tech Wins Girls Swimming and Diving City Title
(University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL) Going into the Public League Swimming and Diving championship, Lane Tech knew it was already going to be starting out the meet behind in points due to diving. For Lane Tech does not have an in school diving facilities and thus did not have any divers competing in the meet. Then it did not help Lane's cause when one of the best divers in the Public League, Corey Kasten, is a member of the Northside Prep/Sullivan Coop team. Northside Prep is one of Lane's biggest competitor for the city championship and was a clear challenger if not the favorite going into the championship meet. "Lane Tech does not have a facility were we can train divers, therefore we always give "free" points to the schools that have facilities to train divers", said Lane Tech coach Josue Sabilon. So, with Kasten winning the diving title, Northside Prep was already up by 16 points. But, despite, the lack of divers, Lane Tech used it's depth and talent to outlast Northside Prep/Sullivan Coop Team and Whitney Young to win it's 4th consecutive city championship. "This is my third year at Lane and every year the girls seem to want to improve more and more!!", said Sabilon. The meet started out well for Lane Tech when Lane Squeaked by Northside Prep to win the 200 medley relay. " The girls in the relay were: Kamila Szczepanik, Ashley Williams, Adrienne Micheli, Micaela Pappageorge. Ashley Williams the breast stroker was able to close the gap, and Adrienne Micheli gave us the lead, which Micaela never lost!! In the second event 200 free style, Jill Schmucker set a new City Record. 2:02.43. Adrienne Micheli came in 3rd place." said Sabilon. Jill Schmucker (jr.) led Lane by winning the 200 free style in 2:02.14 (meet record), 100 backstroke in 1:04.24, and swam on the winning 200 free style relay. Also winning titles for Lane was Morgan Monroe(jr) in the 100 freestyle(54.92), and freshman Usah Sontep in the 500 free style (5:25.14). Lane ended the meet in grand style by setting a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:49.98. Lane Tech now prepares for state competition when they will swim at the Fenwick (Oak Park) sectional next Monday, November 11. Last year Lane qualified two individuals for the state swim finals when Morgan Monroe and Jill Schmucker qualified from the Fenwick (Oak Park) sectional.
