Lane Tech entered the Public League Championship game on a roll being undefeated
in last 14 games. However, one of their losses this year was an
1-0 blanking by Farragut in their second game of the season. So, they started
this game in a state of cautious optimism. Farragut ended up being a very
worthy opponent as Farragut stunned Lane Tech 3-2 on penalty kicks.
Farragut opened the scoring
on a brilliant goal off the right post by German Martinez at the 20:23 mark of
the first half. The ball got through the middle of the legs of a Lane defender, Martinez
got the ball on the left side then striked a shot past stunned Lane goal keeper
Robert Cotan. The ball hit the right post and found the
back of the net to give Farragut a 1-0 lead. After that goal, Lane put
relentless pressure on Farragut goalie Ulises Avina. Avina made several good
saves and held Lane scoreless the first half. Finally Lane connected on a goal
with 9:23 in the game when midfielder German Cervantes crossed a high ball to
Peter Bilecki in the front of the net. Bielecki
headed it in to tie the game. The game then went into overtime tied 1-1 and
after two overtimes with the score still tied it was left to Penalty kicks.
Lane missed their first two penalty kicks when Avina
stopped Bieleckis shot and then Edwin Rodriguez hit
his penalty shot on the cross bar. The winning Penalty kick came when German
Martinez of Farragut shot a goal pass Lane goal keeper Robert Cotan.
Lane put forth a
brilliant effort today but could not pull it out at the end. Farragut ended
Lane’s attempt at an unprecedented second straight championship. Meanwhile
Farragut has won only it’s second city championship
since their boys soccer team won the soccer title in 2003-04.
