The Agony of Defeat

St. Ignatius scores a goal with 13 seconds left in the 2nd Overtime to end Lane's season.

St. Ignatius 1

Lane Tech 0

(Elmwood Park High School, Elmwood Park, IL) Soccer is about maintaing and fighting for possession and controlling the ball. Well, going into the 2nd overtime of the scoreless sectional semifinal game between Lane Tech and St. Ignatius, Lane Tech had controlled possession of the ball for most of the game. In the game Lane Tech out shot St. Ignatius 22-9. The St. Ignatius goalie has to make 11 saves. However, as the time wound down in the second overtime, St. Ignatius won a critical possession and scored on an open net to stun Lane Tech 1-0. Here is what happened. A St. Ignatius player delivered the soccer ball  from around midfield towards the Lane Tech goal about 20 yards out. A Lane defender sensing the danger of the location of the delivered ball sprinted in pursuit. Behind him going at full steam was a St. Ignatius forward player. Lane Tech goalie, Robert Cotan (Sr.) rushed towards the ball as well. Unfortunately, Cotan and the Lane defender collided, the ball squirmed loose to the St. Ignatius player. and he promptly struck the ball in the open net to win the game. With the win St. Ignatius advances to the Sectionals finals this Thursday where they will face Public League power Whitney Young.

Lane Tech finishes a very successful season in which they posted big victories against quality opponents Glenbard North, Lincoln Way East, and Marist. Lane Tech also finished runner up to Farragut in the Public League finals. Congratulations to the efforts of the following seniors  for Lane Tech who will graduate this year.
