2006 Lane Tech Football Schedule painted outside the Hero's Submarine shop on Western and Addison. Pre-Season Recognition for Brandon Carter, Adam Nelson, and Edwin Rodriguez August 25, 2006
Linebacker Brandon Carter Lineman Adam Nelson Edwin Rodriguez Prior to the start of every high school sports season the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune lists the top players in the Chicago area for each perspective sport. Lane Tech’s Brandon Carter and Adam Nelson were selected in the pre-season Public League all-defense team for football and Edwin Rodriquez was selected as one of the top 50 players in the area for boy’s soccer. Senior Brandon Carter is a 3 year starter for Lane Tech. Carter is one of the few remaining members of the Lane Tech 2004 Public League champion football team. In 2004 as a sophomore, Carter was a key component for the team as he was the starting running back and complement to the strong passing game Lane had that year. In the 2005 season Carter played linebacker predominantly but coach Rio still used him in the backfield to mix in some plays with the Running Back William Moorhead and all around player Xavier Torres. As a side note Brandon Carter’s father has to be one of Lane Tech’s loudest and most energetic supporters at football games. You’ll hear him cheering the loudest at games. Sometimes, you’ll even see him cheering on the cheerleaders to cheer louder. Now that is a Lane supporter!!! Lineman Adam Nelson also made the Public League pre-season team. Edwin Rodriguez is Lane’s star forward on the boy’s soccer team. Edwin played on the 2005 Lane team that won the Public League championship and made it all the way to the IHSA Super sectional game. Both are unprecedented events in Lane boy’s soccer history. Lane has never won a city championship in decades. So when Lane beat Mather in 2005 to win the Public League championship, Lane made history. But the 2005 team made additional history by making it all the way to the Super sectionals of the IHSA state playoffs before finally succumbing to Glenbrook South. That means Lane made it all the way to the Final 16 teams in the state. A great accomplishment and Edwin Rodriguez was part of that team. Congratulation to Brandon Carter, Adam Nelson, and Edwin Rodriguez and good luck to the football and soccer teams this fall season! Featured Article 2005 Fall Sports Recap and 2006 Preview By Neil Hernandez Lane heads into the fall 2006 season as the defending Chicago Public League champions in Boys Soccer, Girls Swimming, Boys and Girls Cross Country, and Boys 16-inch Softball. Football The football team edged out Curie to win the Illini-Red Bird Conference. However, they finished with a disappointing 34-26 upset loss to Dunbar in the first round of the Chicago Public League playoffs and a 46-6 first round loss to Warren (Gurnee) in the IHSA playoffs. Morgan Park ended up being the City champions in football after beating Simeon. In 2006, the Football team is once again one of the top teams in the Chicago Public League. However, Hubbard from Chicago’s Southwest side is clearly the Public League’s pre-season top team. Hubbard made it all the way to the state Quarterfinal last year and was led by Running back Robert Hughes and Quarterback Sean Cattuso. Both return this year. Senior Running back Robert Hughes. Hughes is rated the top one or two running backs in the state of Illinois according to www.edgytim.com and one of the top 60 players in the nation according to the Sporting News. Hubbard also returns Quarterback Sean Cattuso who is being looked at by several Division One college programs. Right after Hubbard for Public League supremacy this year is the Simeon Wolverines from the South side. This year Simeon, is out to prove they are more then basketball after winning the class AA state championship in 2005. Simeon is led by Martez Wilson, one of the top tow or three overall college prospects in the state of Illinois. Also returning for Simeon is 3 year starter in Junior Jack Ramsey. Lane also has to contend with defending city and Prep Bowl champion Morgan Park. The Mustangs lost most of their star players from last years state ranked team including now Notre Dame Quarterback Demetrius Jones but Coach Lexie Spurlock always has a dangerous team. So in order for Lane to succeed in 2006 they will need a true team effort. Some individuals to look out for in this years team are speedy Running Back William Moorehead, Linebacker/Running Back Brandon Carter, massive lineman Durell Jamison (6’2” 380lbs), defensive lineman Adam Nelson, Junior Defensive Back James Glaesser, and first year starter Quarterback Robert Pienkos. Head coach Rich Rio calls Pienkos a smart kid (with a 4.7 GPA) and feels he is better than the graduated senior from last year Matt Richard. The last couple of years with pass happy quarterbacks Couri Benz and Matt Richard, Coach Rio focused more on the passing game offensively. This year look for Coach Rio to put more of an emphasis on the running game. Running back William Moorehead had several 100 + yard games for Lane so look for a heavy dosage of William Moorhead for the Lane offense this year. Lane beat Mather for the Public League Championship. To my knowledge it is the first time ever or the first time in decades since Lane has won a soccer championship. So that in itself is a historical achievement for Lane’s boy’s soccer team. But to top it off Lanes’ boys soccer team made it all the way to the IHSA super sectionals before finally losing to Glenbrook South. This is the first time a Public League team has made it as far as the Super Sectionals in boy’s soccer since the elimination of Public League automatic berths in the 1990’s. Even in other sports asides from basketball; public league team rarely gets to the Super sectional level. The winner of the Supersectionals makes it to the state tournament. So in soccer, the state tournament consists of 8 teams. So Lane made it to the final 16 teams. That is a great accomplishment! In 2006 Lane will have to prove that they are not a one year wonder in the soccer rich Public League. Farragut, Foreman, Mather, and a few other teams will challenge Lane for the Public League title in 2006. Girls Swimming Girl's swimming is another success story at Lane. With the coaching of Josue Sabilon, Lane won the Public League championship in girls swimming. Sabilon, a former Lane swimmer and now a head coach is hoping to take Lane to even higher levels this year. Lane looks to take the Public League championship again. Furthermore, Sabilon hopes to have a few swimmers compete in the state level as well. With the return and continued improvement of some star returnees such as Juniors Jill Schmucker and Morgan Monroe this year, Lane hopes to do accomplish big things in swimming. Boys and Girls Cross Country The boys and girls cross country teams also look to repeat as city champions. The girls team led by three time defending city champion Stephanie Hughes and Regina Dydra, hope to stave off an improving cross country program from city runner up Northside Prep. They key for both teams will be the depth and times from runners 3-7. The boy’s team return Seniors Eric Izarry (3rd in the Public League), Joel Wojcik (6th) and Henning Falk (8th) from last years city squad and will be boosted by members from the Public League champion sophomore team. Below are the 2005 Public League Cross Country Championship results. PUBLIC LEAGUE Teams:
Lane Tech 26, Mather 67, Young
76, Northside Prep 90, Lincoln Park 108, Farragut 183, Steinmetz 208, South
Shore 218, Morgan Park 258, Julian 258 PUBLIC LEAGUE Teams:
Lane Tech 25, Northside Prep 36, Lincoln Park 105, Simeon 127, Morgan Park 140,
Young 145, Mather 160, Payton 178, Brooks 242. Girls Volleyball The girl’s volleyball team could not get past the semifinals of the Chicago Public League tournament in 2005. Rival Whitney Young ended up with the Public League championship in girl’s volleyball. Boys Golf The Boys Golf Team will be face difficult challenge to dethrone the juggernaut Northside Prep Golf Team who has won the last four Public League championships. Boys 16-inch Softball The Chicago Public League started 16-inch softball in 1999. Shurz won the team title in the inaugural season. But since then Lane has won 4 championships in 6 years. Last year Lane beat Hancock 7-5 for the Public League title. Look for Lane Tech to be a strong favorite to win title number 5 in 2007. Projected 2006 Fall City Championships: Boys Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Girls Swimming, Boys Softball, Girls Volleyball 2005 Fall City Champions Boys Soccer, Girls Swimming, Boys and Girls Cross Country, and Boys Softball. |
