2006 Football Pre-Season Preview, Predictions, and Thoughts

By: Neil Hernandez

August 25, 2006

Welcome to the Football pre-season preview, predictions, and thoughts section of this website. In this next section, I will review some games and give you some insight on what to expect in the game, my miscellaneous thoughts, and some predictions for each score. My intention is to provide some candid thoughts on the games. So please if you have any thoughts on my column, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm just a Lane Tech and high school football fanatic who wants to talk some football. Enjoy!!

Week 1 Lockport High School

This is Lane's premier game of the season. First of all it is opening day of the Illinois High School season and what can be more exciting then that first game of the season. Secondly, there is a chance that this will be the very first opening game night game in Lane Stadium history with permanent lights. Either way, the place will be rocking and rolling. Expect a large sold out crowd from both sides. The Porters fans travel well and will take the hike from Lockport. As a side note, Lockport’s cheerleaders finished in the top 10 in the IHSA’s first ever state championship cheerleading competition So the pre-game atmosphere will be nothing short of electric. To top off the excitement will be the actual game where the opponent will be Lockport Township High School. Ironically, Lockport Township High School has the same initials as Lane tech High School We are both LTHS. But that is where most of the similarities end.

For those of you who are not familiar with Lockport let me share some facts about the school and their football program.

* Lockport is a far southwest Chicago suburb.

* Lockport High School has most recently played in the SICA conference. But with the recent breakup of the SICA conference, they are playing in a brand new conference called the South West Suburban (Blue). Defending state class 8A football champion Lincoln Way East and perennial football power Bolingbrook is in their conference so they are in a tough conference.

* Do not overlook their 3-6 record last year. They played tough opponents and on of their victories was a 28-13 victory over Lane Tech.

* Lockport won the class 8A football championship in 2002 and in 2003.

* Lockport sells season tickets for their football games because demand is so high.

In short, the Lockport Porters is a school going to a game far away from it's home. Lane rarely plays teams from that far. But it is not any team, this is two time state champions who play in one of the toughest conferences and are eager to prove to everyone that their 3-6 record last year was a fluke. Lane will have to play their A game just to stay with this powerful suburban team. This a true clash between teams looking to make an early season statement. Whatever happens this will be a great experience for both teams.

Prediction: Lockport 32-Lane 23

Week 2 Evanston Township High School

Lane faces another suburban opponent. This time it is a more familiar foe in the Evanston Township High School or E-town as they call it. Lane last met Evanston in the playoffs in the 1990's a couple times. This is their first meeting since then. Evanston High School football has had some troubled records the last few years, but his year they hope to turn it around. Evanston boasts three solid prospects in Nickaro Golding (Defensive End), Alfa Kaba (LB) and Michael Bolden (CB). Bolden signed with Northwestern University to play football for new Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald. So they have some talent to make some noise. The only question is can they put it all together?

Prediction: Lane 16 Evanston 13

 Week 3 Simeon

In week 3 Lane plays the Simeon Wolverines from the South Side. Simeon, fresh off the state class AA basketball championship is out to prove that they are more than just a basketball school, what is a better test than Lane Tech.

Three years ago, Simeon easily handled Lane at Gately Stadium. At that game Simeon was led by now University of Illinois Wide Receiver Bryant Creamer. Two years ago, Lane beat Simeon in the regular season and then ended their season with a convincing victory in the playoffs during their run at the Chicago Public League Championship. The Lane team that year was led by Public League Record setting quarterback Couri Benz and the star receiving corp of Dwayne Pillow, Xavier Torres, and Deon Flowers. Last year, in a game at Gately Stadium, Lane lost to Simeon. Simeon returns two marquee players in Junior Quarterback Jack Ramsey and Defensive End Martez Wilson. Two of the states top Quarterbacks came from the public League last year in Demetrius Jones of Morgan Park and now Notre Dame and Isaiah Williams of CVS. So the spotlight this year falls on Ramsey and Ramsey is out there to prove that he is now the top QB in the Public League.

This match up vs. Simeon is at home at Lane stadium. So Lane should have an advantage because they traditionally play bad in away games at Gately Stadium. I see a great game versus these two Chicago Public League powers. Simeon came close to winning the Public League championship last year but Morgan Park outlasted them to win the city championship. Lane won city two years ago and is out to prove they are a contender to win it again this year. Hubbard is still the class of the Public League but the winner of this game will show who will be one of Hubbard’s biggest challengers.

Prediction Lane 23-Simeon 18

Week 4-8 Mather, Taft, Whitney Young, Lincoln Park, Curie

Week 4-8 features all conference games of the Chicago Public League Illini Redbird Conference. Based on recent history and the current state of these teams, I’m not sure if any of these teams have much of a chance beating Lane Tech. Last year Lane blasted Whitney Young 42-0, Mather 34-13, and Curie 33-17. Lincoln Park is a new member of the Illini Redbird conference replacing Steinmetz. All of these schools have football programs that will need development if they expect to compete with Lane year in and year out.

Predictions Lane Tech 26- Mather 12, Lane Tech 32, Taft 12,  Lane Tech 54 Whitney Young 0, Lane Tech 38- Lincoln Park 6, Lane Tech 28 Curie 12
