Lane, Torres, Romp Curie, Win Conference Title

Lane 33, Curie 17

Lane Tech, Xavier Torres Romps Over Curie To Win The Illini-Red Bird "Torres is our MVP, one of the best players I have coached in nine years,'' Lane coach Rich Rio said as quoted in today's Chicago Suntimes article previewing the Lane Tech vs. Curie game to determine the Illini-Red Bird conference champion.

Those words definitely rung true as demonstrated today by the performance of Lane Tech offensive, defensive, and special team star Xavier Torres. Torres (4 catches for 49 yards, 8 rushes for 53 yards) helped Lane Tech (6-2) solidly defeat Curie (6-2) 33-17 at Chicago's Rockne Stadium by scoring 3 touchdowns.

He scored on runs of 32 and 13 yards and caught a 32 yard pass on 4th down for his touchdowns. Torre?s offensive production was especially important for Lane as Curie held normally stellar Lane Running Back William Moorehead (12 carries, 56 yards) to his first game this season where he did not rush for 100 yards.

Lane scored their other two touchdowns on a one yard Quarterback sneak by Matt Richards and a 50 yard interception return for a touchdown by Defensive Back Shawn Davis. Curie was led by Demarcus Johnson (13 carries, 87 yards, 1 TD) and one of the best kickers in the Public League, Abraham Tapia (46 yard Field Goal).
