Week 1 Chicago Public League Recap

August 28, 2006

The Public League powers traditionally play non-Public League opponents the first few weeks of the football season. This year the premier games were Fenwick vs Simeon, St. Rita vs Hubbard, Carmel vs, Morgan Park, and Lane vs Lockport. In all cases the Public League team lost. Some of the games were not competititive. Fenwick took a 34-6 lead on the way to a 37-28 victory over Simeon ,Lockport took a 31-0 lead over Lane in a convincing 31-6 victory over Lane, defending city champ Morgan Park had a rough game in a 38-14 loss to East Suburban Catholic power Carmel, and the crown jewel of the Public League football Hubbard loss a19-8 decision over St. Rita at Soldier Field. Hubbard has at least 6-7 Division I college prospects on their and many had then favorite to win the state title this year. This loss to St. Rita has put a damper on their season. Nevertheless, they are still the Public League’s best team.

On the bright side, the Public League had three upsets over Catholic League opponents as Marshall shocked Gordon Tech 38-12, Hope edged Hales Franciscan 8-6 and Harper beat Leo 12-6. The Marshall game was especially big as Gordon Tech had high hopes this season after a Quarterfinal appearance in last years state playoffs.

Key Public League games for week 2 will be Dunbar at Maine West, Evanston at Lane, Marshall vs King and Morgan Park vs Richards.
