Robert Barry: Lane Tech Class of 1986, Northern Illinois University Huskie By: Robert Barry
My Lane stats were 6’2” 230, and I was an OT. I was a three-year varsity player (1983-1985) for Sam Bronswick , and two-year starter and letterman (‘84-85). I signed with NIU in ‘86 when Jerry Pettibone was head coach. Since I graduated from Northern, I’ve relocated to San Diego, earned a Masters in City Planning from San Diego State, and currently work for the County of San Diego as a land use analyst.
Couple of thoughts on the ’85 football team: Les O’Hara was the star quarterback (All-City), Don Cuchran was the workhorse fullback (3 year starter), Bill Garrett was the defensive anchor, and I think he was also All-City. We beat Whitney Young by one point to win the conference after losing to them the previous year. They had Russell Maryland at DT, who ended up being an All-American at Miami and the #1 pick in the NFL draft. He was a 300 lb. monster in high school when the only other 300 pounder I knew of was The Fridge. We lost to Gordon in the first round of State in OT. They actually had 12 guys on the field when they scored to win and nobody noticed. We regrouped, rolled through the City Playoffs, and won the Public League Championship at Soldier Field over Bogan. We played the Prep Bowel against Mt.Carmel and went into halftime leading 14-7. Their coaches made great adjustments in the second half and we lost 19-14. We ended up 12-3 for the season. |
