Sports History, Lane Alumni April 7, 2007 Steve Bukieda, Lane Tech Cross Country Legend
Lane Tech cross country legend Steve Bukieda recently passed away Oct 2006 in Oregon.
In it’s long illustrious history Lane Tech won the state cross country championship only one time; that was in 1963-64 under head coach Leonard Jareczek. Leading that team was Steve Bukieda.
Steve finished 2nd in the state that year right in front of teammate Bernie Cobar and right behind state champion Charles Schulz of Evanston. His second place finish was his only loss of the year.
After graduating from Lane Tech, Bukieda continued his running career at the University of Oregon. He ran for a cross country program that is traditionally known as one of the country’s best for cross country. After his career at the University of Oregon, Bukieda decided to live in Oregon. There he was known as an avid fly fisherman and protector of the rivers of the Pacific Northwest.
