2006 Spring Sports Recap and 2007 Preview

Lane heads into the spring 2007 season as the defending city champions in Girls Track, Boys Track, Baseball, Girls Water Polo,  and Girls Soccer.

Baseball

Lane’s baseball team has won the city championship two years in a row after beating Clemente 6-4 at U. S. Cellular field in May 2005. Lane is once again one of the favorites to take the 2007 city crown. But Lane’s baseball team looks beyond the city championship and hopes to advance further in the state playoffs. In 2005 Lane lost to Oak Park River-Forest in the Sectional Finals in the state playoffs and in 2006 lost to state runner-up St. Patrick in the Lane Regional final.

Girls Track

The girls track team is looking to win their third straight city championship in 2007. Prior to 2005 Morgan Park, with one of the state all time Sprinters in Alexandria Anderson (now at Texas) ruled the Public League and state track meets for years. But in 2005, even with Alexandria Anderson as a senior, Lane used their superiority in distance events and enough depth in their sprints and field events to finally overtake the Morgan Park domination to take the city championship. Then to top it off, Lane scored points in the State meet on sprint events to finish in the top 10 in the state meet. Their top 10 finish in the state meet in 2005 was a huge accomplishment in Lane history, in that Lane finished in the top 10 for the first time in any sport since the elimination of automatic Public League state berths in the 1990’s. Lane followed up the 2005 campaign with another Public League crown in 2005. In 2006, Lane led by distance star Stephanie Hughes and Hurdler Morgan Monroe will look to win Lane’s third straight city title.

Girls Soccer

Girls Soccer was another bright spot for Lane in 2006. After losing to Lincoln Park in the city championship in 2005, Lane got redemption by retaking the crown in 2006. Lane loses Loyola bound forward Jackie Vera but should be one of the favorites once again to take the 2007 City championship. Watch out for Payton High School in 2007. Payton returns 4 players who were either first team or second team All-Public League players according to the Chicago Suntimes. Leading that group is first teamer D Mary Santangelo. Payton’s Second teamers are: G: Arielle Rocca, MF: Alissa Dunbar, F: Caroline Harris. They will all be sophomores in 2007 so watch out for the Payton team in the years to come.

Lacrosse

Boys and girls Lacrosse are programs that are not official IHSA sports. Lane fields a team but the Public League does not have enough Lacrosse teams to field a city championship yet, but with the emergence and increasing popularity of Lacrosse, look for development in more city programs. In the next few years, look for a city championship to develop. When that time comes, Lane will surely be a top one or two program in the Public League. Lane’s girls team is already a solid lacrosse program statewide and has even posted some wins against suburban teams (Fremd and others).

Girls Softball

Lane’s girl’s softball teams posted a disappointing loss to Taft for the city championship in 2006. It was disappointing in that Lane has been nothing short of dominant in the Public League for decades. Even against good suburban teams Lane could hold their own. An argument can be made that girls Softball is Lane’s #1 most competitive sport.

In the state playoffs, Lane blasted Evanston in the first round before losing to state 4th place finisher New Trier 1-0 in the New Trier Regional final. 2005 marked the final season for Lane senior stars outfielder Heather Schaeffer and third baseman Daniella Torres, but the future looks promising and if the success of girls softball rubs off in Lane’s other sports then the future will indeed be very bright for Lane Tech.

Boys Tennis

Watch out for Payton this year. Payton was upset by Morgan Park last year in the city championships. However, they will be the heavy favorite to win for the next three years. They have the number one ranked sophomore in the state in nationally ranked sophomore Evan King. King was the highest rated freshman in the state of Illinois last year and finished in the consolation semi-finals of the state meet. King has a shot at winning state this year as a sophomore, but the competition is fierce in Illinois. His biggest challlengers will be defending state champion Dennis Novolo of Warren, Eric Spector of Glenbrook North, and Mac McAnulty of Latin. They are all juniors.....Payton is the prohibitive favorite to win city in 2007; Payton also has junior Morris Bossen. Lane will be battling with Morgan Park, Whitney Young, and Lincoln Park for second. Lincoln Park is led by Senior David Chodack.

 Girls Water Polo

Lane won the 2005 Public League Championship with a 6-2 victory over Whitney Young.

Boys Water Polo

Lane’s Boys water polo team looks to rebound after failing to make the 2005 Public League finals. Von Steuben was the Public League champion after a 7-3 victory over Mather.

Boys Volleyball

Hopes were high after they won the city championship in 2004, but the boy’s volleyball team fell on hard times last year with a quick exit in the city playoffs. Many felt the drop off was due to graduation, coaching changes, and increased level of play in the Public League.   As a result, the Lane Tech boys volleyball team is not getting much publicity this year. Lane lost to upstart Northside Prep early in the Public League playoffs and could not defend their city championship win from 2005. Lincoln Park ended up winning the city championship last year. However, Lincoln Park graduated one of it's top players Kim. Lane returns 6-1 senior outside hitter Angel Arce and 5-6 senior setter Efrain Ortiz. This will be the second year as head coach of former Lane assistant coach Steve Kenmotsu. Kenmotsu should have plenty of other talent besides Ortiz and Arce for Lane won the city championship on the sophomore and freshman levels last year.
