Boys Tennis Payton Easily Claims Tennis Crown May 7, 2007 Walter Payton won it's 3rd straight city boys tennis championship and 4th in the last 5 years. Payton beat out Lincoln Park to take the title. Payton swept the top 3 singles spots. They were led by sophomore Evan King at number one singles who blanked Amir James of Morgan Park 6-0, 6-0, Matt Gorlaka at #2 singles who defeated David Chodak of Lincoln Park, and Morrie Bossen beat Geoffrey Wang of Northside Prep (6-3), 1-6, 7-6.
Lane Tech did not have any singles or doubles teams make it to the finals.
Evan King is ranked as one of the top 4 boys high school tennis players in Illinois and is one of the favorites to win next week's IHSA tennis state tournament. King finished tied for 6th place last year in the IHSA state tournament as a freshman. Meanwhile, Payton had one of the best showings in year for a Chicago Public League school last year by finishing in 22nd place as a team at state. Payton will be aiming to finish even higher this year.
