Ranking Justified!

Lane Tech Justifies It's #9 Rank With Solid Proviso East Invite Showing

Earlier this week the Chicago Sun-Times ranked the area boys track teams for the first time.  Lane Tech was ranked 9th. That was the first time a Chicago Public League boys track team has been ranked that high to open the season in probably at least 10 years.  Many were surprised to see Lane Tech ranked that high. see rankings below:

Top boys tack teams (Sun-Times)
1. Thornton: Loaded from top to bottom in sprints and sprint relays; Brandon McCallister can score in sprints, jumps.
2. York: 3,200-meter relay is fastest in state; always has strong middle- and long-distance runners.
3. Bloom: Brothers Nick and Imani Carey are the team's leaders; Trojans have most depth in 200 and 400 dashes.
4. Lincoln-Way East: Solid pole vaulter in Joe Noonan; Marvin Cosby leads sprints.
5. Thornwood: Phil Jones, Jonathan Majors two big cogs in T-Birds' machine.
6. Wheaton Warrenville South: Football star Dan Dierking already has top times in the 200 and 55 (indoor) dashes.
7. Bolingbrook: Jumper Troy Doris wants another triple-jump title, and a long-jump title, too.
8. Mather: Will give Lane a test in city championships; has had solid indoor performances.
9. Lane: Jay Jordan and Gerald Turner are strong hurdlers, among state's best.
10. Walther Lutheran: Top returner Anthony Johnson in sprints and relays makes Broncos best in Class A.

Lane Tech felt they had to justify its high ranking at the very competitive Proviso East Invite. The Proviso East Invite is one of the more competitive Indoor Meets which included state track powers East St. Louis  (2nd in the state last year), Springfield Lanphier (4th in the state last year), Palatine, Oak Park, and Jacobs (7th in the state last year) in the 19 team field.

Well, Lane Tech had a very solid showing by finishing 7th out of 19 teams.

Lane Tech was led by a first place finish by Fuad Salami in the 55 meter dash (6.59 seconds) and 2nd  place finish by Chris Kyles in the 55 meter dash (6.61 seconds). With the 1-2 finish, Salami and Kyles stamped themselves as one of the fastest runners in the state. They beat Tommie Liddell of East St. Louis who came into the meet with the 8th fastest time in the state according to Illinois Prep Top Times.

Gerald Turner finished .01 of a second behind Artavious Kizer of East St. Louis. Kizer is arguably the top hurdler in the state and finished fifth in last years state meet.

Lane Tech scored points as follows:
