Prepare
For Glory
In the recent adventure movie 300,
Leonidas the Spartan general, tells his small group of Spartans to
“prepare for glory” before they embark on a battle between a much larger
Persian army. He knew the odds of them returning are slim but they take
on the battle willing for the sake of their country.
Similarly, the Chicago
Public League is being represented by a small group of qualifiers to the
IHSA boys state track meet held on Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26.
Also, the Public League runners that will be there know that few if any
will be strong favorites to survive the first day of state Prelims on
Friday to qualify for the state finals on Saturday. Below is a list of
Public League qualifiers running at this Friday’s State preliminaries:
The Public League looks to improve
on last year’s performance at the state meet. Last year, the Public
League as a whole managed to score only a measly one point during the
state meet as the result of Whitney Young’s Azeez Shogbuyi finishing in
9th place in the 100 meter dash. From 2003-2005 the Public
League got completely shut out from scoring at the state meet and failed
to score a singel point.
This year it appears the best
chance for scoring state points will be in Norman Thomas of Whitney
Young in the high jump, Willard Lewis of Julian in the 800 meter run,
Gerald Turner of Lane Tech in the 100meter high hurdles, and the 4x400
meter relay team of Robeson.
"I want to win state in the 800 meter run, " said Julian senior Willard Lewis
Lane Tech's Tory McAlister is the only Public Leauge athlete this year to qualify for state in two events. www.LaneTechFan.com photo |
