Girls Lacrosse

March 29, 2007

Yes, we CAN play Lacrosse in the City!

Lane Tech 12 Regina Dominican 8

(Techny Field, by Northfield, IL) The top girls lacrosse teams usually reside in the lush north suburbs of Chicago. Girls lacrosse giants New Trier, Loyola Academy, Glenbrook North, Deerfield, and Highland Park all are from the north suburbs. However, the Lane Tech girls lacrosse dispelled the myth that lacrosse is only a suburban sport by dismantling Regina Dominican of Wilmette 12-8 in Regina's home field in Techny, IL in between Glenview and Northbrook.

Lane was led by a fierce scoring barrage from senior co-captains Sophia Lugo who led Lane in scoring and the speedy Sinead Cross who shored up the Lane midfield. Lane Tech goalie Yasmine Marrerreo did as much as she could to limit the scoring of Regina captain and leading scorer Claire Costello. Costello is one of Regina Dominican's best athletes and plays golf, basketball, and lacrosse for Regina Dominican.

High School Girls Lacrosse in Illinois

Lacrosse is still a relatively new high school sport in Illinois and is still not yet an IHSA sport. It's only about a decade old in Illinois high schools. Girls lacrosse first started in the suburbs at the club and Intramural level. However, interest began to pick up and in 1998 a group of people took the initiative to form the Illinois High School Women Lacrosse Association to organize the sport in the girls high school level. The IHSWLA started with seven schools and as of 2007 has grown to 35 school. This includes three Chicago Public League schools: Lane Tech, Mather, and Northside Prep. Lacrosse is recognized by the IHSA as an "emerging sport" and when enough teams participate, Lacrosse will be turned into an official sport. This should happen in the next few years.
