Lane Ends Schurz's Dream Season

Lane 11 Schurz 0, 5 innings

(Dukes Child Field - New Trier Regional - Winnetka, IL) A Chicago Public League non-basketball team beats New Trier in the state playoffs about as often as the Chicago Cubs have a chance to make it in the post season in September. In short, it doesn't happen too often. In fact the last time a Public League non-basketball team beat New Trier in the state playoffs was in 2002 when Foreman upset New Trier in a regional final in boys soccer. You can add another Public League victory over New Trier. Unheralded and 14th seed Schurz pulled off the mother of all upsets last Tuesday when it upset 3rd seed New Trier last Tuesday 5-4.

For it's next game, Schurz faced Lane Tech in the Regional Final at New Trier on Saturday, May 26. This game featured a rematch of the Public League softball championship last week when Lane edged Schurz 1-0. So, fans of both sides were expecting a another close game.

However, the game was not close at all as Lane Tech pounded Schurz 11-0 in 5 innings. The game started out well for Lane when leadoff hitter Daniella Torres smacked the third pitch over the left field fence to give Lane a quick 1-0 lead. Moments later Bernadette Hansen  singled in 2 more runs and then Stephanie Huber hit an RBI bunt single to give Lane a 4-0 in the first inning.

Lane made it 11-0 in the 4th inning when Stephanie Huber hit a hard liner off the glove and in the chin of Schurz pitcher Nicole Roman. Roman was injured on the play and had to be taken to the hospital by an ambulance for precautionary measures.

Lane Tech has now won the city championship and now it's first regional title in girls softball since 2003. Lane's next game will this Thursday, May 31 at Resurrection versus most likely Loyola Academy.

"We need to lay our bunts down and keep our spirits up from the beginning" said Lane Sophomore Bernadette Hansen on the keys for playing well against Loyola. "I think we do have a chance, we are a very young team."
