Featured Article 20005-06 Winter Sports Recap and 2006-07 Preview Lane heads into the Winter 2006-07 sports season as the defending Public League champions in Chess, Wrestling and Boys Swimming. Wrestling Lane has a strong sports tradition of wrestling; having dominated the Public League in the 1980 and 1990’s. Last years squad took the city title over Mather. Lane finished with 165 points to Mathers' 144 points. The 2005 squad featured city championships by Scott Minneci (140lbs), Jihad Hamdan (125lbs) and a runner up finish by David Pena (135lbs). Boys Swimming Boys swimming, led by Coach Josue Sabilon is a team on the rise. Lane won the Public League Championship in 2005-2006 and is looking to repeat in 2006-07. Expect the usual Public League Boys Swimming challengers in Whitney Young, Morgan Park, Payton, and Northside Prep to compete for Lane for the 2006-07 title. Boys Basketball Lane’s boys basketball team looks to improve on its 15-13 record last year. Lane finished 3rd behind Von Steuben and Foreman in the Public League Red-North Conference. Von Steuben has one of the top boys programs in the state and has dominated the Red-North for most of the last 10 years. Lane, with some exciting young players has to improve if they want to challenge Von Steuben for conference rights. Lane has never won a boys basketball championship in the basketball rich Chicago Public League and will not challenge again this year. Girls Basketball Girls basketball finished a successful 2005 season with a 55-47 loss to Harlan in the Public League Quarterfinal. Lane’s girl’s basketball team consistently performs well not only against city but also against suburban and private schools. The girl’s team is a perennially top 8 city program for girl’s basketball. Lane’s problem is that they always seem to make it to the city quarterfinals. However, Lane never seems to make it past the city semi-finals where a Marshall, Whitney Young or Hope usually meets them. Those teams are the class of the Public League and most years have top 20 rankings in girls basketball. So for the girls’ team to have a chance at winning the city title in the future they will have to elevate their program to the Marshall, Whitney Young, and Hope levels. But Lanes’ girl’s teams have proven they can compete. Look for another solid year from the girl’s team again this year. Boys and Girls Bowling Morgan Park has been the cream of the crop in the Chicago Public League the last few years. For at least the last three years both boy and girls teams have captured the city title in bowling. Until they are defeated, they are touted to be the favorites again in 2006-07 season. Meanwhile, Lane Tech looks to improve on it's runner finish for the boys in 2005-06 and a 3rd place finish for the girls in 2005-06. Chess Lane Tech chess programs have been able to compete on a state level for decades now with consistent top 20 finishes since the 1970's. Lane Tech chess teams have won the last three state championship for any sport when they won in 1976, 1977, and 1984. Also, Lane Tech's 2nd place finish in 1988 was the last time a Lane Tech team finished in the top 2 in the state for any sport. Look out for another strong year in 2007.
