Lane Tech Girls Chess Team Finishes 2nd in Nationals

Congratulations to the Lane Tech Girls Chess Team for their second place finish in this year's 4th Annual National All- Girls Chess tournament. The Lane Tech team consisted of Crystal Lee-Wardlaw(jr), Terian Koscik(jr), Brittany Maglaya(so), and Olena Jaworska(sr.). Jaworska led the team with 3 points (3 wins) in the 6 round tournament. Jaworska also competed as third board for Lane Tech's chess team that finished 27th in last months IHSA state chess tournament; and helped Lane Tech win the 2007 city chess championship in the very competitive Public League.

Lane Tech had won the previously won nationals 3 years in a row before falling to second place behind national champion Cass Technical High School of Detroit.

The tournament this year was held at the beautiful Palmer House Hilton in Chicago last month.

Just having a girls chess team is an accomplishment in itself because chess in the high school level is a heavily male dominated. For Lane Tech to produce 4 quality female chess players says a lot of the Lane Tech chess program that is run by coach Steve Parsons.
