Winter Sports March 21, 2007 Whitney Young and Lane Tech Rule Public League Winter Sports · Whitney Young captures four Public League titles out of 12 varsity sports and activities · Whitney Young finishes 2nd in the state in chess · Lane Tech is also impressive with three Public League titles and two runner up finishes
When you think of the best overall programs in the Public League, Lane Tech and Whitney Young are two schools that always come to mind. Well, this 2006-07 winter sports season proved no different as those two rival schools combined accounted for seven of the 12 city championships awarded to varsity sports and activities. Whitney Young captured titles in boys swimming, pom-pons, academic decathlon, and girls basketball; while Lane took titles in girls bowling, cheerleading, and chess. Only Simeon in boys basketball, South Shore in girls indoor track, Kenwood in boys indoor track, Corliss in wrestling, and Morgan Park in boys bowling prevented a sweep. It is important to note that neither Lane nor Whitney Young participated in the Public League indoor track meets. If Lane did decide to participate in the meet, they would have been the heavy favorite to win both indoor track championships. Against state competition the Public League has always fared well in basketball and chess. This year was no different as Simeon finished 2nd in boys basketball, Marshall finished 3rd in boys basketball, North Lawndale finished 2nd in boys basketball for class A, and Whitney Young finished 2nd in chess. Chess was a particular bright spot for the Public League as 4 teams finished in the top 27 at state including Whitney Young- 2nd, Payton- 6th, Lincoln Park- 23rd, and Lane Tech 27th. On an individual level, the Public League finished with four state medalists in chess led by David Olhausen of Payton who finished first in Board 3. Lane Tech qualified their boys bowling team at state and Whitney Young qualified their girls bowling team for state. The highest Public League Bowler finisher in state was Kia Giddings of Agriculture Scinece who finished an impressive 9th place. The Public League has not had a state medalist in swimming since Brandon Johonson of Kenwood finished 3rd in the 100 fly in 1998. However, Whitney Young made strides in boys swimming as it qualified 3 individuals to participate in the state meet.
