Indians struggle at Schaumburg

November 29, 2006

Lane Tech finished second in the Schaumburg Tournament last season and had their sights set on walking out of the Saxons gym with a championship trophy this season.

But the Indians lost all five games they played and now have their sights set on getting into the win column.

Rockford Boylan edged Lane 39-37 Tuesday, Nov. 21, on a three-pointer with four seconds left in the game.

"We played better than our record indicates," Lane head coach Frank Zeph said. "All the games were close, but that's the problem."

The Indians lost to St. Charles East 38-29 last Thursday.

Wheaton-Warrenville South edged Lane 41-38 Saturday. The Indians overcame a 24-16 halftime deficit to tie the game at 36 before the Tigers pulled away down the stretch.

"We did a good job of holding them to 17 points in the second half," Zepf said. "Defensively, we haven't been doing too bad. Offensively, we're too perimeter oriented right now.

"One of our keys to success is getting our sophomore and junior front line involved in the offense. Our senior guards need to get the ball inside. Our guards are hitting shots to keep us in the game, but we're not getting to the free throw line."

Tiffany Jackson was named to the All-Tournament team, while Mary Dennewitz contributed with solid all-around performances throughout the tournament.

"I think we improved as the tournament went on," Zepf said. "The last two games could have went either way.

"The slow start is tough, but we are doing our best to keep our spirits up. I hope playing these tough teams now will help us out a lot. Otherwise it could be a long season."

Lane (0-5) will have another chance to get its first win when it visits Nazareth Saturday.

"We're going to try and involve the rest of the offense and add some new plays this week at practice," Zepf said. "We need to work on the fundamentals as well. Early in the tournament we were turning the ball over, we need to cut down on that."
