In the same week that the Chicago Bears beat the New Orleans Saints to qualify for the Super Bowl, the girls basketball teams did their own "super" victory as both the sophomore and varsity teams defeated Regina Dominican of Wilmette. What makes the victories especially impressive was that Lane beat a traditionally strong basketball team which as recently as 2003 finished 3rd in the state in girls basketball.

The girls sophomore team (18-5) put together another complete performance as it gutted out a 36-32 victory after being behind 14-12 at the half. Lane guard Jazmin Corranza (13 points) made 4 key straight free throws down the stretch to ice the game. Christina Toomer chipped in 6 points to aid Lane's victory.

The sophomore team is putting together quite a good season. The effort to become successful is there. They have already won a split of conference with Von Steuben, Each team beat each other once during the regular season to tie for the conference.

On the varsity side, Lane won a game in which they led the entire game. Lane jumped to an 11-3 lead on a 3 pointer by Alaina Schrader (5'5" jr guard). and went into the half with a 25-22 lead.

"We're still trying to put a complete game together, the first half was better than the second half. It seems like that's been the trend the last couple of games. If we can work out that slow start we can be on good shape going into the playoffs," said Lane Assistant coach Josh Cockrell, "we gott make sure we stay focused and stay sharp."

Lane was led by Alexis Dillon's 10 points. Regina guard Irene Maginot score 19 point to lead the Panthers.

The varsity team plays Lincoln Park this Wednesday January 24 for the Windy City Conference city playoffs. The girls team which as freshman beat Hope for the city title last year look like a favorite to go deep in the city playoffs. They play Amundsen at home next Monday in the first round of the city playoffs.
