Wrestling Team Preview 2006

December 05, 2006

by: a LaneTechFan.com reader

I believe the Lane Tech Wrestling team will be one of the most exciting
teams Lane will  have this year.  A definite favorite for the city championship, They won city and the regional titles last year with 8 juniors, 3 seniors and 2 sophomores. With such a young team last year, one of the youngest in the city, they will be ready to put their name out in the state possibly this year.  SR. Jamelle Williams, 160 lbs is the head captain and last year's MVP of the wrestling team.  He is being scouted by
Johns Hopkins University as he has 4.5 GPA/ 27ACT.  This past summer he made the USA Wrestling Team Illinois Greco-Roman National team, and he wants toand should  wrestle in college. He led the team
with a 30-11 record medalling in every tournament last year. Look out for him as an under the
radar wrestler in the state. Other big names is football player/ co-captainSR. Koshion Barfield (28-12),
and state alternate/ co-captain SR. Scott  Minecci (22-15).
With a schedule loaded with suburban powerhouses Lane will struggle a little bit this year but with 9 RETURNING seniors starting (outof 14), the experience will kick in.

Other starters to watch include:

JR Tog Ganbold (JV City Runner Up)
JR Yuriy Koverko (transfer student from WI)
SR Nestor Rivera (All City 6th Place)
SR Stevie Santana
SR Gerardo Trejo
JR Casey O Brien
(JV City Champ)

Please make an effort to go see …. Wrestle The first meet is the annual Lane Tech vs. Evanston meet on November 22nd in Evanston.  This is always a very emotional meet because former Lane coach Rudy Salinas now coach Evanston and its Lane's chance to duel them.  To make matters worse, recently former coach Ed Nobiling now coaches for Evanston to make the duel that much more exciting.  Now the boys have to wrestle the coach that led them to a city title and the first ever regional wrestling title at Lane
last year.
