Corliss claims first city crown
Chicago Tribune Article
January 28, 2007
Against all odds, Corliss
captured its first Public League wrestling championship with 265 points, ahead
of Bowen (237), Kelly (219.5) and Lane (208.5). Corliss trailed Lane entering
the semifinal round 163-159.5.
''We won the city championship in spite of all of the obstacles placed in front of us,'' Corliss coach James Brown said. ''We often have to share uniforms, practice space and equipment, but the kids got the job done today.'' Led by Jonathon Freeman (160), the tournament's outstanding wrestler, and Andre' Bydom (103), Corliss placed five wrestlers in the finals. Freeman spurred the Trojans to victory with a shocking 3-1 semifinal upset of state qualifier Ronald Reed of Hope. ''In the first and second period against Reed, I was nervous,'' Freeman said. ''But in the third, I listened to my coach and just opened up my attack.'' A returning city champion, Freeman dominated Lane's Jamelle Williams 7-1 for the title. Bydom pinned Mather's Luis Carreto at 2:34 of the second period. The most anticipated final featured two returning city champions, Hope's Larry Lanier (152) and Corliss' Ryan Matthews. Lanier used a takedown and escape to build a 3-0 lead and thwarted a comeback by Matthews to win 3-2. Runner-up Bowen crowned three champions, DeAndre' Brown (119), James Walker (171) and heavyweight Johnathan Ransom. Fenger won three titles behind Charles Hubbard (130), Raymond Brown (189) and Johnathan Jones (215). Other champions included Kelly's repeat champ Edel Vaca (112) and Juan Ortiz (145), Bogan's Robert Nickson (135), Kelvyn Park's Abel Alvarado (125) and Lane's Scott Minneci (140). 2007 Public League Championship Results Teams: Corlis 265, Bowen 237, Kelly 219.5, Lane 208.5, Hope 156, Fenger 151.5, Mather 122, Kelvyn Park 106.5, Dunbar 95.5, Von Steuben 89, Hubbard 79, Taft 75, King 67.5, Prosser 63.5, Harper 58, Rooservelt 56.5, Bogan 55.5, Vocational 52, Clemente 50, Austin 48.5, Washington 48, Marshall 39, South Shore 38, Ag.
