Lane Tech Captures Mather Regional

  • Lane Tech bounces back to advance 12 of 13 wrestlers to sectionals.
  • Individual winners for Lane include: Nestor Rivera (135lbs), Scott Minneci (140lbs), David Mihaila (145lbs), Jamelle Williams (160lbs), Yuriy Koverko (171lbs), and Koshion Barfield (189lbs).
  • Lane will be at the Leyden sectionals next Saturday Feb 9-10.

    

 

Lane Tech Wrestling. There is no better way to rebound from a disappointing tournament, than to win the IHSA Regional title the next week. Thats exactly what Lane did as they edged Ridgewood 265-235.5 in the Regional at Mather. The was Lane's 2nd consecutive title. It was a complete team effort as the whole team contributed points and qualified for the Sectional Tournament either as a wrestler or an alternate.

Lane was led by champions 135 Nestor Rivera (Dec. 7-4), 140 Capt. Scott Minneci (Tech fall), 145 David Mihaila (Maj. Dec. 16-5), 160 Capt. Jamelle Williams (Dec. 9-8), 171 Yuriy Koverko (tech Fall), and 189 Koshion Barfield (Fall 57 sec.). Tog Ganbold and Reymond Baranda took 2nd. Justin Cobb, Adolfo Valdez, Justin Vargas and Stevie Santana also qualified with 3rd place finishes. Jeffrey Vuong won his first match of the season and it couldnt come at a more opportune time as he placed fourth making him an alternate for the sectional tournament. The Sectional will be held at Leyden High School in Franklin Park. With the first two rounds on Friday and the semis on Saturday. Good Luck.

Lane did what they had to do by beating up on all the northside school. This sectionals had mainly Public League school and then thrown in there was Gordon Tech, who was at the bottom of the Catholic League. The only suburban school was Ridgewood of Norridge. Ridgewood in usually not known to be a sports powerhouse. But again, Lane Tech did what they had to do and won the regionals by qualifying practically everybody.
