Lane's Minneci won't be denied

Lane Tech may not have been able to repeat as city team champions but there
was no way the Indians Scott Minneci was going to be denied.
The senior claimed his second straight city title after topping Kelly's Diego
Macias at 140 by a score of 6-3.
"I felt that a lot of people were after me since I was city champion last
year," Minneci said. "I wasn't trying to be overconfident. I'm just glad I
didn't get second place or less."
Minneci started the city tournament off with a bye. His first opponent was
Taft's undefeated Enkhbayar Myagmarjav and he won via points to advance to
Saturday.
His first win on Saturday was fairly easy. Minneci pinned his opponent in the
third round and that helped give him some extra confidence.
"I was leading by two or four points," Minneci said. I was about to take him
down and I caught him when he tried to reverse it. I got him right on his back
and pinned him."
The semifinals brought a showdown with a wrestler from Dunbar.
"I ended up winning 7-0 but there was some confusion," Minneci said. "They
took away a team point because I talked to one of my coaches on the sidelines."
After making it past the semis Minneci realized he was just one win away from
the title.
"I figured I've gone this far I may as well give it my all to get first," he
said. "It was an hour break and then we had the grand march with all the
finalists.
"I took (Macias) down once but I couldn't get him again. After the first I
was ahead 4-1. I knew if I kept doing what I was doing I wouldn't have a
problem."
There was some disappointment that Lane didn't nab another team title.
"A lot of our guys in the semifinals lost and all the guys from Corliss got
to the finals," Minneci said. "It was disappointing because we won it last year
and we thought we had a stronger team this year. We were upset."
The Indians will now try to rebound as they head into the Mather Regional
this weekend.
"We'll just practice more and get our minds set more because we have to if we
want to take regionals," Minneci said.
